Tom LeonardNov 14, 2011

Boxing lost one of its all time greats last week, when the legendary "Smokin" Joe Frazier died of liver cancer at the age of 67.

With a pair of gloves and his championship belt draped over his casket, nearly 4,000 mourners flocked to the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in Philadelphia on Monday to pay their respects to the former champion.Ā

Among those in attendance were famous promoter Don King, fellow PhiladelphiaĀ great Bernard Hopkins and Muhammad Ali, who suffered his first professional loss to Joe Frazier.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson delivered the eulogy. Former champion Mike Tyson sent a videotape voicing his condolences, as did business mogul Donald Trump and actor Mickey Rourke.

Frazier was an aggressive fighter armed with a famously deadly left hook, which he used to finish Ali in their legendary bout at Madison Square Garden.

Even more well known is the third matchup between the two, which Ali won in 1975 in Manila, Philippines. After 14 rounds, Frazier was nearly blinded by swelling from Ali's punches. Pleading to go back out for the final round, Frazier was held back by his trainer, Eddie Futch. Ali explained the bout was the closest thing to death he could imagine.

Joe Frazier was the heavyweight champion from 1970 until 1973, when it was taken from him via early knockout by George Foreman. Frazier would never be able to regain the championship belt.

He leaves behind a proud family, and a legacy as one of the greatest fighters in the history of boxing.
