Penn State Scandal: Video Moments from University's Darkest Days

Eric BowmanNov 9, 2011

The events unfolding at Penn State will go down as one of the biggest scandals in sports history.

Grown men covering up a former coach molesting young boys on school grounds has people fuming, especially since this tragedy could have been avoided.

Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was allegedly using his charity, Second Mile, to molest young boys, and many more crimes could have been prevented if McQueary and other Penn State officials took action.

Unfortunately, the Nittany Lions failed to do the right thing, and now they are paying the price.

This story continues to grow with each day, and it could be a while before it is put to rest.

Since this scandal is so big, lots of things have been happening, which is why we decided to put together a list of some of the moments captured on video.

Matt Millen Cries on 'SportsCenter'

1 of 12

Matt Millen is currently an ESPN analyst, and the network knew they had to have him talk about this tragedy, as he is a former Penn State player.

Millen played defensive tackle at Penn State from 1976-1979, and when discussing what happened at his alma mater, and what his former coaches did, he gets very emotional around 3:15 in the video.

All of this happened on live TV, and it is great evidence to how truly heartbreaking this story is.

Penn State Statement

The Nittany Lions were supposed to have a press conference on Tuesday, but school officials decided to cancel it.

This video shows media members first learning of the cancelled presser, and once people were made aware Paterno wouldn't be talking, it caught like wildfire.

Paterno later said he wanted to talk and eventually will, but not having this press conference kick-started even more discouragement at Penn State.

After all, it's not going to go away if people don't talk about it.

Scott Paterno Speaks

Joe Paterno's son, Scott, quickly reacted when news broke that his father would eventually no longer be the head coach at Penn State.

He answered a few questions, and tried his best to get away. This video displays just how much attention this scandal is getting.

You can tell Paterno wants to get into his house, but with so many media members swarmed around him, he's forced to talk for a minute.

4 of 12

Everybody wants to hear JoePa speak.

So when the 84-year-old left his house for football practice, he was nearly attacked with video cameras and flashing lights as people took his photo. One guy almost gets on top of his car!

This scandal is clearly reaching new heights.

Joe Paterno Returns Home

Paterno sort of escaped the media craziness at football practice, but he was surely still thinking about it.

When he arrived home, the crowd from a few hours before had easily tripled in size.

Fans chanting Paterno's name as he walks to his front door is a great scene.

As Tuesday night went on, more and more people showed up outside Paterno's home.

The chanted his name for hours, and even broke out into song, proving that the love for Paterno runs deep.

One Student Disagrees

Not everyone was rallying in support for Joe Paterno on Tuesday night. Some decided to speak out against him, which of course resulted in a lot of shouting and boos.

Everyone has their own opinion, and this guy believes Paterno should go.

Students Speak Up

8 of 12

It's one thing to hear students chant Paterno's name for hours on end, but to actually hear them talk puts in perspective how much they care for their school's head coach.

Paterno built Penn State into a brand, and these are certainly troubling times.

Joe Paterno Finally Addresses Fans

9 of 12

They waited in the cold all night, hoping their beloved coach would say something to them. I'm sure eating dinner at Paterno's house Tuesday night with all those fans outside was rather interesting.

Paterno finally walked out on his lawn and decided to address all those who are sticking by his side.

He has yet to say whether he will be the Nittany Lions coach moving forward, but coming outside to show his love for his fans was a really nice gesture.

This scandal will continue to develop as the days go on, and there will certainly be more video to bring you, so do not fret, because we've got your back.

Penn State Board of Trustees Fires Paterno

10 of 12

Not long after Paterno announced he planned to retire at the end of the season, the Penn State board of trustees decided to fire the legendary coach.

Nobody expected this to happen so soon, and what ensued after it was utter chaos.

Penn State Students Riot

11 of 12

Penn State students spent the day outside Paterno's house, cheering him on and chanting his name. Once they learned the school fired him, they decided to take it out on their campus.

Violence is never the answer, and these students have made matters worse at a time when Penn State needs to heal and find a way to repair its image.

Joe Paterno Speaks, Again

Paterno made a few trips to his lawn to address fans earlier in the day, so when he learned he was fired over the phone he decided to step outside one final time to talk to his fans.

These are hard times at Penn State, and it will definitely be difficult to see someone other than the legendary coach on the sidelines for the Nittany Lions.
