Penn State Scandal: Joe Paterno Wise Not To Break Silence at Press Conference

T.J. McaloonNov 8, 2011

The Jerry Sandusky scandal has nothing but horrible, disgusting, vile and wretched things coming from it. There is nothing that can be said or done that can be fixed or make this better for the people involved or around this story.

It’s why at today’s press conference, there is absolutely nothing that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno can say in regards to this situation.

Paterno cannot say that he should have done more (like go to the authorities), should have fired Sandusky or should step down now.

Any one of those statements makes for a negative public outcry from a different mass of people.

If Paterno says he should have done more, the outcry is, “Well, why didn’t you do more? You knew about this and you could have done something.”

If Paterno says he should have fired Sandusky, the outcry is, “No, that would have just swept it under the rug. You should have gone to the police.”

If Paterno resigns from his spot as the leader of the Penn State program, the outcry is from his supporters, that have been with Paterno throughout all of his many years with the program. They have seen Paterno survive 3-9 and 4-7 years only to turn the ball club around to finish 11-1 the next season.

They have been with Paterno, even after the majority wanted Paterno to step down because of his age.

Today’s press conference has to be about the men in the current Penn State program, which, even before this Sandusky scandal, was having a great season.

This current Penn State team has one of the best defenses in the country, is starting to head into the Top 10 of the BCS standings and has a great chance at playing in the Rose Bowl this year as the Big Ten champion.

For those of you who will be turning into the Paterno press conference today, looking for some big announcement or Paterno going in-depth what he and that graduate assistant talked about, you will be disappointed.

Today’s press conference will have a lot of eyes and ears watching and listening to what the coach will have to say.

However, not only is the best defense to say nothing, but this press conference should be about the present team, not about what happened in the past.
