St. Louis Rams: It's Official; We Are Talking about Cleaning House, Again!

David HeebOct 25, 2011

I just came across this article by Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post dispatch.  Gordon makes a strong case for a regime change at Rams' Park.  The Rams are 0-6, and they are arguably the worst team in the National Football League right now.

While the Rams' have been embarrassing to watch this season, I'm not sure if I agree with Gordon.

The Rams are horrible, but part of that is due to injuries.  The team has gone through seven different cornerbacks this season, including Bradley Fletcher, Ron Bartell and Jerome Murphy—the team's top three corners.  Steven Jackson missed a significant amount of time early in the season with a strained quad.  Even starting QB Sam Bradford has missed a game due to injury.

That is a lot for a team to cope with against the competition the Rams have faced so far.

They lost to the Eagles, a team many people were predicting might win the Super Bowl.  They lost to the Giants, on the road.  The Giants might win the NFC East.  They lost at home to the Ravens, who until last night were arguably the best team in the AFC.

Their most winnable game so far was at home against the Washington Redskins.  You have to remember, the Redskins were in first place in the NFC East until this past weekend.  Then the Rams went on the road and played reasonably well against the Green Bay Packers.

Maybe you've heard of them?  They won the Super Bowl?  Yeah, they're pretty good.

This past weekend the Rams were embarrassed by the Dallas Cowboys, in what was easily their worst performance of the season.  The Rams allowed Cowboys' running back DeMarco Murray to channel his inner Emmit Smith and rush for 252 yards, breaking that proud franchise's single-game rushing record in the process.

So the Rams have played bad, but they've been hurt, and they've played a brutal schedule.

What if the Rams' schedule did a 180, and we played the games in reverse order?  What if they started out with Seattle, Arizona, Cleveland, Cincinnati, etc?  What if the Rams were 3-3 right now, would we be talking about a regime change?

Of course not.  So why is everybody up in arms about such a poor start?  I predicted the Rams would win the NFC West, and even I had them under .500 after Week 8.  This early schedule was just that tough.

So everybody just take a deep breath.  Do you really want to get rid of Devaney and Spags?  Look, I'm no fan of Devaney's draft record, and I've pointed out how poorly coached the Rams have been this season, but do we really want to make Sam Bradford go through his third offensive coordinator in three seasons?

That is a recipe to turn Bradford into Jason Campbell.

So be patient Rams' fans.  It's not time to hit the panic button yet.
