WWE and Their Tag Team Division: The Awesome Truth
You know, a funny thing happened last night. When I went to sleep, I was thinking about doing an article on WWE and their new focus on tag teams.
All I needed was a title that was catchy. Then it hit me! "Awesome Truth!" - wow, I thought I was so smart thinking that one up all on my own...
Then I came online an hour ago, only to see WWE is using that name. My heart sunk. So close, yet so far away.
Do not forget though, if Punk, Colt and Kings of Wrestling form a stable, they will call themselves the "Cult of Personality"—I still own that one.
A few weeks ago, I covered WWE (Triple H) looking to sign a few big name tag teams. I openly talked about how skeptical I was.
WWE caring about tag teams? Come on, get real folks!
Well, it is looking more and more like I may have some egg on my face soon. That is fine, I can admit when I'm wrong—that's cool.
The problem is, we have heard all of this before, only to realize it was a short term idea, with no execution over the long term for the company.
With that fear behind us all, let's break down what could be a WWE tag team division. Again, no "fantasy booking", just realistic options.
1. Awesome Truth: Miz and Truth were so good on the mic last night it wasn't even funny. These two had great chemistry and will work well against anybody.
Last week, I talked about how Miz is in a great spot right now, and guess what? He is.
This reminds me of Edge and Orton back in 2006. They were doing a fine job on Raw, but DQ needed a heel team to face, so they fought them for a few months, even winning the tag titles.
No "punishment" or being "buried", just two great talents teaming up to take on the Red Brand, and it worked out perfectly. Both Edge and Orton went onto amazing careers with no problem.
2. The Usos: Yes, they are still around, and yes, they are basically jobbers. However, they are a legit tag team. Same tights. Same music. Same look. Same name.
Seems like a legit team to me! While the crowd has never cared for them, and neither have I, every division needs a few jobbers in them. Usos will likely never make a big splash together, but that still doesn't mean they can't have some great tag team matches.
3. Air Boom: Kofi and Bourne are the new tag team champions of WWE. Yes, "Air Boom" is a terrible name, but that is what I am going with.
These two are perfect for the new division to start off with. They are over with the crowds, and they were not doing a whole lot, other than losing in 5 minute matches.
Great pairing here that could mean many great matches ahead, especially against Awesome Truth!
4. Nexus Remains: David and Michael lost their titles last night on Raw, and I doubt they will see them again. I am a fan of Otunga's, not so much of Mr. Not-So Perfect.
These two play the heel role well, and have a ton of learning to do inside the ring, so I have no problem with these two staying together for a long time.
5. Vickie's Men: Swagger and Dolph may be fighting now, but if Vickie ever does get a stable of her own (save the jokes), why not pair these two up?
It seems like Dolph is almost headed up a face turn (bad move). I still see Vickie trying to rally up some men (saves the jokes again) and take on the tag team division someday.
6. Young Bucks: I won't spend too much time with this one because it seems these two screwed up big time during their tryouts by not shaking the veterans' hands.
Bad move guys! Enjoy the indies for life...if you ever get a WWE contract, congrats! You would make a great addition for some high flying action.
7. Beer Money: Yeah, next to no chance of happening, but the rumor was out, so I felt the need to quickly cover them.
They are a great team, and both could be huge superstars on their own one day. The only way for that to happen is a jump to the WWE.
8. Kings of Wrestling; It seems more like a "when" and not an "if" with these two. They are leaving ROH and coming to WWE.
I have seen very little of their work, but all signs point to these two knowing their craft and being ready for the main stage. The more the merrier for tag teams...
9. Briscoe Brothers: Again, the rumor was out there, so I will quickly touch on it. I do not like them.
I really don't. They would need complete overhauls to win over the WWE Universe (and myself). Again, if it happens, mark down yet another WWE team...
10. Khali and Jinder: Yes, these two come and make a great team. Khali does the power moves. Mahal learns the ropes a little bit.
I have no problem with that pairing whatsoever, as it is pretty clear neither are doing much in the solo ranks right now. Team them up for good and let them work!
There you have it - 10 tag teams, with very little "fantasy booking" to go around. A few face teams. A few heel teams. A few make shift teams.
I am sure others will get thrown in there like Cody/Ted and Punk/Colt, but I feel they (and others) are better on their own.
What do you folks think?
Is WWE finally serious about making a great tag team division again?
