Donovan McNabb Offically Traded, Named Starter and Gets His Old Number

It did not take very long for the Vikings to decide who their starting quarterback would be. In fact, camp has not even started yet.

According to Leslie Fraizer, Donovan McNabb will be the opening day starter for the Sunday, Sept. 11 game in San Diego. He was traded to the Vikings officially on Friday for a sixth-round draft pick in 2012 and a conditional draft pick in 2013 from the Washington Redskins.

McNabb is a 12-year veteran of the NFL and has thrown 230 touchdowns and run for 28 more, while throwing 115 interceptions. Fraizer said that he expects McNabb to be the starter throughout the 2011 season.    

While most people had expected McNabb to be the case, many would have liked to see Christian Ponder to have something to fight for during training camp. Who knows, maybe he could have won the spot. The kid is very intelligent and will be able to pick up the offense quickly.

McNabb, however, can not practice until Aug. 4, and the Vikings open training camp on Aug. 1. Hopefully, Ponder will be able to get some good reps in with the starting offense to get a feel for it in the meantime.

There is no doubt that when McNabb starts to practice, he will be a good influence on both Ponder and Joe Webb. 

McNabb also secured his No. 5 from punter Chris Kluwe for mentioning Kluwe's band Tripping Icarus five times during a press conference, conditions that Chris Kluwe had tweeted about earlier in the week. It was all in good fun.
