Nnamdi Asomugha to Eagles: Why This Works out Perfectly for New York Jets
Nnamdi Asomugha just signed a five-year, $60 million deal ($25 million guaranteed) with the Philadelphia Eagles after the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets both dropped out of the running in the Asomugha sweepstakes.
Asante Samuel is currently on Philadelphia's roster and making $9 million per year, making him a likely candidate to be moved out of town thanks to the Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie acquisition.
How does this all play into the hands of the New York Jets?

Well, they don't need Nnamdi Asomugha. Rex Ryan already has Darrelle Revis and he can continue to rely on Revis Island in 2011.
They do need to acquire another cornerback and if they don't want to bring back Antonio Cromartie, they can certainly make a play for Samuel who will be sure to hit the trading block. Samuel and Cromartie will likely make similar money over the next few years, so it would make sense for the Jets to pursue Samuel who has more cover skills than Cromartie.
Either way, Cromartie or Samuel should become a New York Jet within the next few days, and that is all the Jets need opposite of Revis.
However, the biggest reason this acquisition of Asomugha by the Eagles helps out the Jets is because the Jets desperately need to add someone in the front seven that can rush the passer.
Entering this offseason, the biggest needs for the Jets were to keep Santonio Holmes, re-sign Cromartie or land another corner and to bring in a pass rusher.
There are still some solid options available that can rush the passer, one of which is Cullen Jenkins. Jenkins had a terrific season in Green Bay and is a savvy veteran that would fit in well in Ryan's defense. But Jenkins is not the only option available right now; there are other pass-rushers available including guys who were recently released by the New England Patriots.
The Jets and Patriots love to pass their players back and forth so Tully Banta-Cain and Ty Warren would also be options and should be relatively cheap. If they looked to add one or two of those guys, they would likely be able to pursue a couple more players in the front seven.
Another option for the Jets would be to attempt to re-sign Braylon Edwards. Edwards has made it known that he would like to return to New York, but they have not attempted to contact him. It is no secret that the Jets need to add another receiver after losing already Brad Smith to the Buffalo Bills.
The Jets are likely making the call right now to Cromartie and Edwards and hoping that both are still willing to return to New York even though the Jets have spent the last three days wasting their time with Asomugha.
The signing of Asomugha by the Eagles could not have worked out better for the Jets, who now have the cap room to fill the rest of their needs instead of creating a super duo with Revis and Asomugha.
