Tennessee Titans Eye Matt Hasselbeck, but Would He Play Caretaker for One Year?

Chad MintonJun 7, 2018

Everyone around the NFL is foaming at the mouth right now about making free agency deals once the new collective bargaining agreement is reached, and the Tennessee Titans are no different.

The possibility of the Titans signing Matt Hasselbeck was something I speculated about earlier this offseason, and for the Titans it makes sense.

By adding Hasselbeck to the roster, the Titans would be getting that seasoned veteran that could lead them to a wildcard spot.

Let's be honest here. The Titans may not be a team loaded with talent, but their schedule is an average one at best.

The real question is whether or not it's really the right move for Hasselbeck. It all depends on how many years Hasselbeck feels that he has left in the tank.

The Titans didn't draftĀ Jake LockerĀ in the first round for him to ride the pine for too long, so would Hasselbeck be okay with a rookie quarterback waiting to take his place?

I'm not so sure he would be.

Hasselbeck showed everyone last year that he is still a valuable quarterback in the NFL, and the Seahawks have no intentions of letting him go. They have nothing better at quarterback, so why would they?

The Seahawks will do everything they can to persuade Hasselbeck to stay, and they should start with the fact that he's pretty much guaranteed to be their starter for the next few years.

The Titans can't necessarily say that, because Locker is the future and Hasselbeck knows that.

It really all comes down to patience when you have a rookie quarterback that is intended to be the next leader of your franchise.

If the Titans sign Hasselbeck, then a quarterback controversy may not be too long after that. Kerry Collins can tell you that.

Many of the players have also expressed their positive beliefs in Locker, including Chris Johnson.

There's also a very small window of opportunity here for Hasselbeck if he doesĀ switch to a new team. Does he really want to enter a complex situation that the Titans currently have at quarterback?

Those complexities definitely don't exist in Seattle.

There's also plenty of other teams in the Matt Hasselbeck sweepstakes, and some of them will be able to offer Hasselbeck a more long-term status as a starter than the Titans may be able to.

Hasselbeck has always been a very confident quarterback that knows what he wants. I doubt he's ready to keep the seat warm for a rookie quarterback.
