Washington Redskins: Why Mike Shanahan, Denver Bronco Ryan Harris Should Reunite
Yesterday NFL.com reported that Denver Broncos right tackle Ryan Harris has indicated a willingness to once again work for Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan.
Harris would be an intriguing option for the Redskins to pursue in the event of free agency. The franchise desperately needs to fortify a line that has been the Achilles' heel of the offense in recent years. One of the main priorities for Mike and Kyle Shanahan in this area is to find linemen more suited to the requirements of their famed zone blocking schemes.

Harris played two seasons for Mike Shanahan in Denver in 2007 and 2008 and is well versed in the nuances of the system. The 6'5", 300-pound former Notre Dame star possesses nimble footwork and a polished hands technique.
A capable athlete, Harris is a fine run blocker. He could fit in well on the Redskins line especially if, as expected, another ex-Bronco Kory Lichtensteiger takes on a starting role at either guard or center. This would give Shanahan two experienced zone blockers.
At 26 Harris is the right age to complement the efforts of Shanahan and general manger Bruce Allen to construct a younger roster.
One area of concern with Harris is his injury record. After managing 16 starts in 2008, niggling fitness problems have limited Harris to just 18 starts in the past two seasons.
The Redskins do have a question mark at right tackle. 2010 starter Jammal Brown has his own durability issues and failed to make much of an impact last campaign. Brown is also a pending free agent and it remains to be seen how hard the Redskins will push to keep him.
One option could be to retain Brown on a limited deal, especially if the organisation is unsure about his health. The former New Orleans Saint can play both tackle positions and would be useful cover for Harris and last year's top draft choice, Trent Williams.
If Harris does hit free agency the Redskins will have to move fast. A promising young tackle such as Harris should face no shortage of possible destinations.
But given his history with Shanahan and the statement of intent his signing would make about the coaching staff's desire to address one of the biggest weaknesses on the team, the Redskins should seriously consider making the effort for Ryan Harris.
