LeBron James: 8 Things We've Learned in the Last Year Since the Decision

Ethan NorofJul 8, 2011

It has officially been one year since LeBron James' The Decision was aired and he chose the Miami Heat as his new team.

Despite the fact that James changed his uniform, many of the similar traits that we saw him display in Cleveland transferred over to his new home in South Beach.

Here is what we have learned about the most maligned superstar in the NBA as a result of his unorthodox actions.

LeBron & Wade Can Co-Exist

1 of 8

When LeBron and D-Wade teamed up, there were some concerns that the two wouldn't be able to co-exist on the court together.

While James seemed to defer to Wade in the finals, that was the proper move considering how white-hot Flash was throughout the championship round.

The two superstars were able to successfully share the rock with a greater efficiency than many had predicted, and it should only continue to get better with the more time that they spend together.

An NBA Championship Doesn't Come Easy

2 of 8

NBA championships aren't supposed to come easy, but after James promised at least seven rings during his tenure with the team, he better get to work as soon as possible.

When Miami wilted at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks, that line came back to haunt James and the Heat and will likely continue to do so as long as they remain without a title.

They are going to face some staunch competition from a handful of clubs that have proven capable of beating them, and it's not going to be an easy road to navigate.

LeBron Isn't Afraid to Ask for Help

3 of 8

LeBron obviously isn't afraid to ask for a little help from his friends.

While many claim that his legacy took a hit by joining forces with Wade & Bosh in Miami, his real legacy won't even begin if and only if he's able to ascertain a championship.

While James might have switched to a different uniform, let's not forget that Kobe Bryant had plenty of help in his championship quests as well.

The one differentiating factor between the two is Bryant's ability to step up when his team needs him most, but that's why he's still up five titles to none.

Ego Is Much, Much Bigger Than We Thought

4 of 8

Apparently, LeBron James' newest team was more important than anything that happened one year ago today.

While some argue that James bargained in good faith and it was a benefit to the Boys & Girls Club, there's very little doubt that his me-first attitude was at the epicenter of his decision to air his team of choice.

When you've got "Chosen 1" tattooed on your back and you fail to live up to expectations, you've got to expect some fairly significant backlash as a result.

Needs to Work on His Communication

5 of 8

LeBron is one of the most talented players to ever grace the NBA's talent pool, but his ability to articulate himself to the media is not one of the finer points in his game.

Not only should James have notified Cleveland of his obvious disinterest in re-signing with the club, but his general lack of attitude toward the public and self-indulgent language have become putrid.

Because of the way that James has handled some of the biggest moments in his post-game presser, it's hard to imagine that he'll ever live up to the expectations that have been placed on his shoulders.

There Is No Guarantee That He'll Ever Win a Title

6 of 8

Not five, not six, not seven...maybe not even one or two.

Despite James promising to bring the accolades to South Beach with him, there is no guarantee that he will ever win a title no matter where he takes his talents.

It requires more than just intrinsic skill to win it all. To win requires a certain level of intangibles to be possessed that James has yet to show heretofore in his career.

While it's certainly possible that he emerges with a ring before his career comes to a close, it's far from a guarantee.

Miami Heat Still Dwyane Wade's Team

7 of 8

When LeBron landed in Miami, many thought that he had the potential to overshadow everyone else on the team and stake his claim as the man.

Not so fast.

Remember that Miami-Dade County was re-named Miami-Wade County in an effort to get Flash to stick with the club, and as long as he's on the roster, there's no doubting who is the man for the Heat.

And if you needed further evidence, just look at who was the team's top player when it mattered most.

Still Lacks a Killer Instinct

8 of 8

The major knock on LeBron has been his inability to come through when it matters most, and James did nothing to curb that concern with his performance in the finals.

Although he looked dominant in every round leading up to the final one, James absolutely disappeared in the final quarter of each game against the Mavericks, and was thoroughly embarrassed by Dirk Nowitzki.

If the Heat are going to win a title next season or in any campaign moving forward, LeBron needs to step up in an extraordinary way in order to achieve the greatness that he desires.
