UFC 133 Fight Card: Rashad Evans and the 20 Best One-Loss Fighters in MMA

Tim McTiernanJul 7, 2011

UFC 133 is just around the corner, and it has a very interesting main event.

The main event pits Rashad Evans (15-1-1) against upcoming prospect, Phil Davis (9-0).

When you look at their records, the first thing that jumps out would be the one loss that Rashad has suffered, and the zero losses that Phil Davis has suffered.

Of course, most people would expect Rashad to be the better fighter, which signifies that a perfect record does not always make you the better fighter.

Let's take a look at some of the best one-loss fighters in MMA.

Dominick Cruz

1 of 21

Dominick Cruz (18-1) is the former WEC Bantamweight Champion and the current UFC Bantamweight Champion.

In his last fight, he avenged his lone loss when he defeated Urijah Faber by unanimous decision.

His one loss was, obviously, against Faber.

Back in 2007, Cruz challenged Faber for the WEC Featherweight Championship. Cruz was forced to tap out to a guillotine choke at 1:38 of the first round.

Brian Bowles

2 of 21

Brian Bowles (10-1) is the former WEC Bantamweight Champion.

Bowles started off his career with eight straight wins, and he captured the bantamweight championship during that process.

In his first title defense, he lost the title to Dominick Cruz, when the fight was stopped after the second round due to a broken hand.

Since then, he has won two more fights, and is working his way back to another shot at the title.

Demetrious Johnson

3 of 21

Demetrious Johnson (10-1) is a current UFC bantamweight.

Johnson is currently on a four-fight winning streak since suffering his only career loss.

It happened at WEC 48, in his WEC debut, when he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Brad Pickett.

Since that time, he has taken down Kid Yamamoto and former champ, Miguel Torres.

It's being said that Johnson could be next in line for a title shot.

Jose Aldo

4 of 21

Jose Aldo (19-1) is the former WEC Featherweight Champion and the current UFC Featherweight Champion.

Aldo is currently on a 12-fight win streak, having suffered his only career loss in 2005.

It happened at Jungle Fight 5, when he was submitted to a rear-naked choke in the second round by Luciano Azevedo.

For a full description of the fight, you can check out Aldo's Wikipedia page.

Joe Warren

5 of 21

Joe Warren (7-1) is the current Bellator Featherweight Champion.

Warren is currently on a five-fight winning streak, having suffered his only career defeat against Bibiano Fernandes in 2009 in Pride.

Warren was submitted with an armbar in only 42 seconds.

Warren's first fight after that was in the Bellator featherweight tournament, and he hasn't looked back since.

Patricio Freire

6 of 21

Patricio Freire (17-1) is a current Bellator featherweight, and soon to be title challenger.

"Pitbull" is currently on a three-fight winning streak, all three of which were in the Bellator featherweight tournament.

Prior to those three fights, he lost the Season 2 Featherweight Tournament to Joe Warren.

After winning the tournament this year, he'll get his shot at the title, and a shot to avenge his only career loss.

Frankie Edgar

7 of 21

Frankie Edgar (13-1-1) is the current UFC Lightweight Champion. Seems to be a trend of UFC champs with one loss, eh?

Edgar's one loss is well documented, as it came to the current No. 1 contender to his belt.

Back in 2008, Frankie dropped a unanimous decision to Gray Maynard.

He got a chance to avenge the loss at UFC 125, but the fight ended in a split draw.

He should get another chance sometime in the fall.

Charles Oliveira

8 of 21

Charles Oliveira (14-1 [1 NC]) is a current UFC lightweight.

Oliveira's last fight was originally a submission victory, but as an illegal knee, which directly led to the submission, went unnoticed by the referee, and it was overturned to a no contest.

In the fight before that, Oliveira suffered his lone loss to consensus No. 3 UFC lightweight, Jim Miller.

Oliveira is 21 years of age, and he still has a long career ahead of him. Maybe he'll get another shot at Miller someday.

Rory MacDonald

9 of 21

Rory MacDonald (11-1) is a current UFC welterweight.

MacDonald was seven seconds away from not being on this list, but alas, he was TKO'd at 4:53 of the third round in his fight against Carlos Condit.

Although after that fight, MacDonald was able to put the loss behind him, and he took a unanimous decision over Nate Diaz at UFC 129.

MacDonald's next fight is set to be against Mike Pyle at UFC 133.

Rick Hawn

10 of 21

Rick Hawn (11-1) is a current Bellator welterweight.

Hawn's lone loss came in his last fight, the Bellator welterweight tournament finals. It was a split decision which went the way of Jay Hieron, although it was a controversial decision.

Hawn has got world-class judo, and will probably look to make a run in the next Bellator welterweight tournament.

Jon Jones

11 of 21

Jon Jones (13-1) is the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, and the fourth one-loss champion in the UFC today.

Jones lone loss came as the result of some bad refereeing by none other than Steve Mazagatti.

Most people probably know what happened, but here's a quick overview.

Jon Jones threw illegal elbows; Steve Mazagatti stopped to check on Matt Hamill; Hamill said he couldn't continue; Mazagatti called it a DQ win for Hamill; it was later revealed that Hamill couldn't continue due to a shoulder injury, not the illegal elbows.

However, since that time, Jones has rattled off four straight victories, and won the LHW title from Shogun Rua.

His next fight is against Rampage Jackson at UFC 135.

Rashad Evans

12 of 21

Rashad Evans (15-1-1) is the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and a current UFC light heavyweight.

Rashad's only loss came in the first defense of his title at UFC 98, when he was KTFO'd by Lyoto Machida in one of my favorite highlights of all time.

Prior to that, Rashad would have lost a decision to Tito Ortiz, but Tito was penalized a point for holding onto the fence, which is where Rashad got his draw from.

Rashad's next fight will be the headliner at UFC 133 where he takes on undefeated prospect, Phil Davis.

Muhammed Lawal

13 of 21

Muhammed Lawal (7-1) is the former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion, and a current Strikeforce light heavyweight.

Lawal started off his career 7-0, including wins over Gegard Mousasi and Mark Kerr, but then he met Rafael Cavalcante.

He was TKO'd at 1:14 of Round 3, and therefore lost his title.

He is now set to return to the cage when he takes on Roger Gracie at Strikeforce 36.

Junior Dos Santos

14 of 21

Junior dos Santos (13-1) is the current No. 1 contender to the UFC heavyweight championship.

JDS is undefeated inside the Octagon, and is currently on an eight-fight winning streak.

The one loss occurred when JDS tapped out to an armbar at 1:13 of the first round against Joaquim Ferreira, a man who he already held a victory over.

JDS has been in two straight heavyweight title eliminators, and he has won both of them.

He has proven time and time again that he is a top heavyweight, and he now gets to prove it when he takes on Cain Velasquez in the fall.

Brendan Schaub

15 of 21

Brendan Schaub (8-1) was a finalist on Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter and is a current UFC heavyweight.

Schaub went into the TUF house undefeated, and then in the finale, he was knocked out in the first round by Roy Nelson.

Since that time, he has won four straight fights—three finishes—over such fighters as Gabriel Gonzaga and Mirko Cro Cop.

After a hard push for this fight, he will be taking on Minotauro Nogueira in the UFC's return to Brazil at UFC 134.

Cristiane Santos

16 of 21

What would this list be without the ladies?

"Cyborg" Santos (10-1) is the current Strikeforce Women's Middleweight (145 lbs) Champion.

Santos is on a 10-fight winning streak, which means that she suffered her only loss in her first pro fight.

She won the vacant title by TKO'ing Gina Carano in the first round, and she has defended it twice since that time. She also won Beatdown of the Year for her fight against Jan Finney.

Gina Carano

17 of 21

Any excuse to put a picture of Gina Carano into a slideshow, right?

Gina Carano (7-1) started off her career 7-0, until she met Cyborg.

Cyborg TKO'd her with only one second left in the first round, and Carano hasn't fought since then.

That's nearly two years off, so she has since dropped off all top 10 rankings lists. She was supposed to fight at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum, but was forced to pull out for unannounced medical reasons.

Sarah Kaufman

18 of 21

Sarah Kaufman (13-1) is the current Strikeforce 135-pound champion.

She suffered her only career loss in the second defense of her title to Marloes Coenen.

After that, she won a fight in a regional show, and she is now set up to fight Liz Carmouche at a Strikeforce: Challengers event.

She is well on her way back to the belt.

Megumi Fujii

19 of 21

Megumi Fujii (23-1) is a current journey-woman fighter.

She started off her career going 22-0, and then she fought Zoila Gurgel for the Bellator Women's 115-pound championship.

She suffered her first career loss via controversial split decision.

After that, she went to World Victory Road and won a unanimous decision over Emi Fujino.

Zoila Gurgel

20 of 21

Zoila Gurgel (11-1) is the current Bellator Women's 115-pound champion.

She started her career 5-0, and then she lost her first fight to Miesha Tate via second-round armbar.

After that she won six fights in a row, including winning her way through the Bellator tournament and gaining the title.
