UFC 129 Post Fight: Canada Wins 6 of 10 Fights and George St.Pierre Retains
I waited a long time for last night, 19 years to be exact. When it all came down and the dust settled I was not disappointed in the least. I soaked in all that was the show of UFC 129 in Toronto, and watched our Canadian Mixed Martial Artist kick absolute ass in the entire extravagant process.
Where to begin in the breakdown of what went on at last night's fight card at the Rogers Center? I'll try to break it down:
The Building
Was decked out and set up beautifully visually. The way they set up the big screens, floor seats and different floor booths was excellent and the ring was smack dab in the middle of it all so that all sides were equally served.
The Crowd
The crowd was rowdy and loud all night long. They were also extremely educated on every aspect of the sport. Cheering and roaring at every appropriate exchange in the cage. Respect was shown to each and every fighter on the card. There was booing yes, but it was only in the national pride Canada vs. type of way. Example, Pablo Garza was cheered loud for his sick flying triangle on Yves Jabouin and Lyoto Machida was also cheered loud by the naturally pro Couture fans for his amazing flying front kick stoppage.
The Fights
The fights are always a part of the show that you sometimes can't control. The fans got extremely lucky as this card delivered big time. There was a little bit and sometimes a lot of everything. Here is my complete fight summary:
1. Pablo Garza gets a submission win by an incredible flying triangle on Yves Jabouin in fight one.
Canadian Fighters: 0-1
2. John Makdessi gets a fantastic knockout over Kyle Watson with a perfectly executed spinning backfist.
Canadian Fighters: 1-1
3. Jason MacDonald gets a quick submission win via triangle choke. A triumphant and impressive return for one of our first to be successful in the UFC, and a personal favorite of mine. I was so glad to be there to see JMac win.
Canadian Fighters: 2-1
4. Ivan Menjivar won by knockout with a crushing elbow to the cheek of Charlie Valencia. The veteran Valencia made a sleepy error in the clinch and left himself wide open, Menjivar capitalized with a precision elbow.
Canadian Fighters: 3-1
5. Claude Patrick put in a solid convincing decision win with better conditioning and striking vs. Daniel Roberts.
Canadian Fighters: 4-1
6. Jake Ellenberger predictably proved too much for Sean Pierson and knocked his lights out with a big counter left. An impressive feat on two weeks notice.
Canadian Fighters: 4-2
7. Rory MacDonald put on a technical bullying of a lackluster Nate Diaz. The 21-year-old from B.C. is well ahead of his time, and has serious MMA skills in his arsenal. He is Canada's future No. 1 fighter in my opinion.
Canadian Fighters: 5-2
8. Ben Henderson beat Mark Bocek by a fair bit decision and showed off his solid, fast paced game of kicks, slips and uncanny strength. Bocek tried valiantly to impose his jiu-jitsu game on Henderson, but he was simply a bit too strong and too good for Bocek to handle.
Canadian Fighters: 5-3
9. Vladimir Matsyushenko threw a solid, textbook combination in the initial exchange and knocked down Jason Brilz and then finished with some hammer fists. Brilz mildly protested and was stunned by the stoppage, but it was warranted as Brilz was knocked out when the referee stepped in.
10. Lyoto Machida threw a spectacular, Karate Kid-like jumping front kick that landed flush to the chin of Randy Couture, and knocked him flat on his back to gain the knockout victory.
It was a highlight and honour for me to be there for his last MMA bout. He is one of the best all time and the crowd went absolutely ballistic for him all night. He went out with us chanting his name again despite the loss.
11. Jose Also gained a solid win, and not his usual fantastic performance in his decision over Mark Hominick. Aldo still showed flashes of his brilliance and was clearly the stronger wrestler. The real story for me was Hominick, who battled hard and took a tremendous amount of punishment and actually dominated Aldo from the top winning the fifth round. His performance was the highlight of my evening.
Canadian Fighters: 5-4
12. GSP put in a typical but slightly lackluster performance against a game but sloppy Jake Shields and retained his UFC title. This fight was the main event yet was the worst on the card. GSP beat Shields with jabs and a few take downs, and Shields scored a few counter jabs and straights. None of the exchanges were epic.
Canadian Fighters: 6-4
It was a fantastic night for fans of MMA as the UFC put on an amazing event and show in Toronto. It was an even better night for Canadian MMA fans as our fighters made us proud even in defeat, and proved that our best can and will hang with the very best in the world of Mixed Martial Arts.
