Roger Mayweather Shoots Down Mayweather vs Spadafora, Says Cotto Fight Possible
Roger Mayweather, world-class trainer and uncle of undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25, KO's), spoke in an interview with boxingscene.com about his nephew's next fight.
Starting out, Uncle Mayweather discussed the sensational first-round-knockout victory his undefeated prospect Jesse Vargas (15-0, 8 KO's) scored over ring veteran Vivian Harris (29-6-1, 19 KO's).
""[Vivian] came in as an opponent and left as an opponent....The thing about it, he wasn't trying to fight back anyways. I told [Jesse] to come right to him."
"
Here is what Uncle Mayweather said about a rumored potential return fight for his nephew against troubled former lightweight champion Paul Spadafora (45-0-1, 19 KO's):
""That's not going to happen. It don't mean nothing."
"
Mayweather continued to discuss Mayweather's potential tuneup fights and mentioned Puerto Rican boxing icon Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO's):
""A whole bunch of guys would be a good tuneup fight. He could fight Cotto. He could fight a whole bunch of guys."
"
Mayweather also reiterated his nephew's interest as well as dominance in a mega fight with popular pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO's):
""He can get a couple tuneup fights and fight Pacquiao. He whips Pacquiao's ass and don't got to prove nothing else."
"
Mayweather also had this to say about the recent reports of his nephew's IRS troubles:
""He has money. I don't think he really blows through money. There are things he does with money but he doesn't really blow through money."
"
Though much was addressed, one question remained: When will Mayweather Jr. enter the ring again?
Uncle Mayweather's response seemed very assured that if his nephew is paid right, he will fight:
""I don't even talk to him about boxing. I believe if they get that money right I am sure he will fight. If there is enough money to be made I am sure. I can't see why not."
"
The talk of Cotto being a tuneup seems ill-conceived, since Cotto is a tough three-division world champion at 140, 147 and 154 pounds—that's not to be taken lightly.
If Mayweather Jr. can pull off such a high-profile return bout, he will likely be thrown back into the pound-for-pound discussion.
Mayweather Jr. hasn't fought since May first of last year, when he turned the clock forward on "Sugar" Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO's) in a one-sided defeat that made the 39-year old Mosley look every day of his age and a few more.
Since not fighting, Mayweather's name has fallen lower if not off many boxing expert's pound-for-pound rankings.
With rumors of a Spadafora fight being squashed, can a much bigger fight such as one against Cotto really be in store?
We'll just have to wait and see what the "Boxing Gods" can deliver to the fans.
