Floyd Mayweather Prospect Jesse Vargas KO's Vivian Harris in Round 1
Junior welterweight (140 lbs) prospect Jesse Vargas (15-0, 8 KO) was praised by Floyd Mayweather Jr. for an impressive first-round knockout of his toughest foe yet, veteran Vivian Harris (29-6-1, 19 KO).
According to boxingscene.com, Mayweather Jr. had this to say about his fighter's performance: "To fight a former two-time world champion, he showed a lot of composure."
Mayweather continued, "You know, he just went out there and he executed the gameplan that was given to him, and did it to near perfection."
Vargas is co-promoted by Mayweather and Golden Boy Promotions. Vargas is also trained by Mayweather's trainer, Roger Mayweather.
According to Ring Magazine reporter Michael Rosenthal, Vargas came early with a vicious flurry to the body.
Hard body shot after body shot wore Harris down to the point that Harris couldn't fight back by the end of the round.
Head shots soon followed, leaving Harris dazed and literally running back to his corner at the end of the first round.
Referee Joe Cortez came to Harris' corner to see if he was okay. Harris decided he didn't want to see the second round.
This is the shortest time Harris has ever been knocked out.
Ricky Hatton rival Carlos Maussa and British champion Junior Witter knocked out Harris in the seventh round in 2005 and 2007, respectively.
Then-junior welterweight prospect Lucas Matthyse ended Harris in Round 4 of their fight in February of last year.
Victor Ortiz knocked out Harris in three rounds September of last year to outdo anyone who came before him.
Now Vargas has outdone them all, which is either telling of how amazing Vargas is becoming or how finished the 32-year-old Harris actually is.
Mayweather made a lofty prediction about Vargas, saying, "I truly believe that he can be one of the biggest stars in the sport in the future."
If Mayweather is right, this victory is a wonderful step in the right direction.
