New York Mets Collapse Worse Than Last Year?

James C. HallSep 17, 2008

Wednesday (9/17)

I just finished watching my beloved New York Mets squeak out a win against the Washington Nationals—another squeaker that had me throwing things and screaming at my TV.

We have lost two of three to the worst team in the NL East and have one more to go.

Our bullpen is made up of no names that look terrible—the worst kind of terrible.  For example, Aaron Heilman came in and even the Nats announcers discuss how solid he has been. He then blew it horribly by allowing two men to reach and left with runners on first and third with no outs.

They didn't score, given the next reliever's work, but these are the Nationals.

Can this year's ultimate collapse be worse than last year?

Yes.

Last year was supposed to be a fluke—something no team has ever done, nor would ever do.  No, it hasn't been a seven-game lead lost in 17 games, but to continue to struggle and lose to the likes of the Nationals, Atlanta Braves, and Florida Marlins is ridiculous.

Fire everyone at the Major League level—Omar Minaya, Jerry Manuel, the entire bullpen, the hitting and pitching coaches, the third and first base coaches, everyone in the lineup except Jose Reyes (keep Argenis Reyes, too, I suppose), David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Ryan Church, and maybe Daniel Murphy and Fernando Tatis (hurt).

I am at my wits end with this particular team and expect nothing but the worst at this point.  I hope we make it to the playoffs but what can any Mets fan expect if we do?

Somebody needs to do something before our good players leave for greener pastures, which after the last two seasons who could blame them?
