What an embarrassing day for Pac-10 football.

It all started on Friday night when the worst team of the Pac-10, The Washington State Cougars, went into Texas to play the worst team in the Big-12, The Baylor Bears.

WSU was supposed to challenge Baylor, but what happened, they got absolutely pummeled.  It was over at the end of the third quarter as Baylor took a 35-14 lead.

Now its not like the Cougars were expected to win, but to get beaten by 28 is a poor showing.

Pac-10 = 0-1

Things would only get worse on Saturday….

The first game of Saturday also occurred in Texas, between the Stanford Cardinal and TCU Horned Frogs (I love that name).  TCU is by no means a good team this year, well obviously Stanford isn’t either.

Stanford lost 31-14, although it was closer then the score suggest as TCU scored two TD in the final three minutes.

Pac-10 = 0-2

Now the real tragedy starts.

No. 23 Cal at Maryland…Maryland is a joke of a team and they had just lost 24-14 at Middle Tennessee State.  Yes, you heard that right, Middle Tennessee State, you know, the Blue Raiders.  I didn’t even know their team name until I looked it up when I saw that they beat the Terrapins.

Cal was favored by 14, and I’ll be the first to tell you I thought that should have been even higher.  Apparently not, as Cal fell flat on their face and lost 35-27.

The score makes the game seem closer than it was, as Cal was down 35-13 with six minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Pac-10 = 0-3

Yep, I agree. At least the Pac-10 teams go out and actually play DIVISION 1, BCS Conference teams, at their place, across the country, in the non-conference season.

They don't play the Girl Scouts four times in a row, for non conference games, and all at home!
      What a joke.

Must be nice to start 4-0 every year without having to even lift a finger.
Yeah! Here comes Coastal Carolina.... Yippee... here come Louisiana Monroe! Wow! North Texas is in town! Exciting!

over the SEC and Big-12, thats laughable! Pac-10 will have only 3 ranked teams after today, the SEC and Big-12 will each have 5+

C'mon its clear the Pac-10 is overrated, sure its better than the Big East, Big-10, and ACC, but it is not the best conference in college football!

    Hi J.D.,

So, with the exception of Oregon, you base your conclusion about the PAC-10 on the results of the bottom teams in the Conference.

We still have as yet to see how USC finishes but they're up as of this minute now 14-3. Oklahoma is expected to beat Washington. And it isn't any real surprise about UCLA.

One week of football does not make a season, and one season doesn't make a the overall record for a Conference my friend. Lets compare the past five or ten years in conference wins, bowl appearances and the number of players going into the NFL. I believe those numbers will show the PAC-10 is right up there with the SEC.

is CAL and UCLA at the bottom of the conference? No, they are each in the top 5 of the conference (USC, ASU, Oregon, Cal, UCLA) The overall depth of the Pac-10 is clearly weak (Arizona, Washington, WSU, Oregon State, Stanford), which is what makes the Pac-10 weak compared to the SEC and Big-12.

The author is right. The pac-10 screwed the pooch big time this weekend, regardless of what happens with USC. I love UCLA and that blowout was an embarrassment. I wonder if there is something in the air out here this week?

@steven- uh, what an igonorant person, enuff said
@larry- if you had actually read the article you would've noticed that the author excluded usc from his bad teams. ucla might not have been a surprise to lose but to get completely embarrassed, 59-0. that is to byu, a non bcs team remember. as john stated, it's not just the bottom teams getting beat. ucla and cal are 2 of the top 5 with cal supposed to be the second best and let me tell you, they're loss to the "mighty" terrapins was not as close as the score. you can even throw in oregon which took 2 ot's to beat purdue. what a joke!

    The answer is NO!

That distinction is reserved for the ACC, Big East & Big-10.

How can the ACC or Big East be overrated when they're both considered by far the worst BCS conferences? I think you're confusing overrated with worst.

Without USC, the Pac-10 would struggle against Texas and Florida High School Powerhouses!! And plus, it looked as if Ohio State is very beatable by anyone, so USC shouldn't be too proud of it as they enter their joke of a schedule.

Pretty rough for the PAC10 conference this week but, they did get that bigtime win over Ohio State that everyone has been talking about. It would be interesting to have you follow the PAC10 for another couple of weeks and write a follow up article just to see if things continue downhill or will they show that the PAC10 is one of the three best conferences this season.

You have proposed a premise. Stick by your guns unless your continued reporting reveals a different conclusion for you.

So, Pac-Hater, who's your top conference in the country? We have DOMINATED teams all over the place for the last few years, and an off Saturday (yes, granted, a VERY off Saturday this was) and we're now the worst conference in college football. Just for the record, you can't be the worst conference if one of your teams is #1. Big 10, balls. ACC, balls. SEC, pretty good. Big 12, eh. I just think that there's a lot higher level of competition top to bottom in college football.

That said, I am only shocked about one of these scores: 59-0 UCLA routed by BYU. That's the worse loss since 1929, when USC beat UCLA 76-0.

Big 12 conference lets look at the teams they have played so far shall we? The Big 12 North has Colorado had a hardtime beating Eastern Washington that's sad. Iowa State played who so far this year? South Dakota State and Kent State. Kansas just lost to the number 19 team in the country University of South Florida while Kansas was the 13th seed, so they are going down in the rankings. Kansas State has played North Texas and Montana State. Missouri had a tough time against Illinois. Then played Nevada, Southeastern Missouri State, and next week Buffalo. Nebraska has played Western Michigan, San Jose State, and New Mexico State. Wow how is there any doubt that the Big 12 has such a good record they play a bunch of teams that have no chance. Only a select few actually played competitive teams and those were either close or lost.

Big 12 South Baylor has played Wake Forest and got crushed and Wake is ranked number 23, then they play Northwestern State, and yes one of the worst teams in the Pac-10 conference the Washington State Cougars. Oklahoma has played Chattanooga, Cincinatti, and Washington. (Washington was coming off a tough loss to a ranked team on a totally BS call) but they didn't show up today. Another easy team to play for the big 12. Oklahoma State has played Washington State already went through them, Houston, and Missouri State, and there next game is Troy. Texas has played Florida Atlantic and UTEP, and next is Rice. Texas A&M lost to Arkansas State and barely beat New Mexico. Texas Tech has beat Eastern Washington, Nevada, and Southern Methodist and next game up is Massachusetts.

What do these teams have in common they play teams that are easy victories on the first part of the season.

SEC East who have any teams played that is good this year? UCLA? They just got pummeled by BYU so what does that say about Tennessee? Florida has played Hawaii and Miami and their next game is Tennessee. That's an easy victory for the Gators. Georgia had to hold onto just beat South Carolina, and they played easy games against Georgia Southern and Central Michigan. Kentucky has been solid but Louisville hasn't done anything this year, Norfolk State, and barely beat Middle Tennessee. South Carolina beat North Carolina State which they were supposed to do, then lost to Vanderbilt, and now Georgia they hung in there, but still lost. Next game they play is Wofford. Tennessee was ranked and lost to an unranked UCLA team. Then they beat UAB. Not really that tough of a schedule to start out for Tennessee and soon they'll be 1-2 because they'll get crushed by Florida. Vanderbilt has played Miami (Ohio), South Carolina, and Rice. They also play Duke later on this year.

SEC West Alabama beat the then number 9 ranked Clemson which has fallen fast. Overatted from the start were Clemson. Then they played Tulane and Western Kentucky. Arkansas barely beat Western Illinois and Louisana Monroe. Auburn is ranked number 9 and just beat Mississippi State 3-2. Come on how is a school ranked number 9 and they don't have any offense? They also played Louisana-Monroe and Southern Mississippi. Mississippi beat Memphis, lost to number 20 Wake Forest, and beat Samford. Mississippi State lost to Lousiana Tech, beat Southeastern Lousiana, and scored only 2 points against Auburn. Please it seems the big 12 and SEC like to schedule pushovers to get their rankings. I'm not saying that the Pac-10 doesn't do it but at least they try to face teams that actually have some sort of talent.

For people who think that Maryland was a bad team because they lost too Middle Tennesee well I think you're flat out wrong about them. They just needed a wakeup call and losing to Middle Tennessee was it. Da'Rel Scott gave the Cal defense a hard time and he was one of the top rushers in the country. Cal made most of it's comeback once Da'Rel Scott had to leave because of an injury to his arm. Again there was also a missed call that took a lot of momentum away from Cal as well. Who knows how the game would have turned out if the officials would have done their job, right?

what is this repetitive jibberish? and what does it mean? In all of your posts you've just named SEC teams and their pre-season opponents. Your reasoning, if there is any, is not evident in your posts.

"Auburn is ranked number 9 and just beat Mississippi State 3-2. Come on how is a school ranked number 9 and they don't have any offense?"

You obviously just viewed the box score and made this false claim, although neither team scored a TD, it wasn't entirely because of weak offensive production, as you assumed, but rather two smash-mouth defenses battling it out, not allowing the other team to advance the ball on consecutive downs.I guess you could ignorantly say both of these teams are just horrible all around by just watching Sportscenter.

""Please it seems the big 12 and SEC like to schedule pushovers to get their rankings. I'm not saying that the Pac-10 doesn't do it but at least they try to face teams that actually have some sort of talent.""

It is true that this year the PAC does have the tougher OOC preseason schedule, but your statement falsely condemns the SEC to playing weak OOC teams each year, and if you did your homework and watched college football, you would be knowledgeable enough to not make this claim, you would've known that the SEC played arguably the toughest OOC schedule last year with teams such as:

      SEC OOC schedule 07'

      USF
      #9 Louisville
      #8 VT
      MIZZOU
      #12 CAL
As you can see, the SEC has it's fair share of tough opponents it plays, this year the PAC did schedule tougher OOC match ups, and apparently that was a big mistake.

So your attempt on downplaying the SEC's preseason wins, doesn't really relieve the embarrassment of the PACs poor preseason record this year.

I could pick apart your weight-less comments more, but I've got homework, and you should start doing yours before posting on topics where you have little ammunition.

It's only the second or third game of a 12-13 game season, depending on the team and the conference.

It's still early. In college football it works like this if anyone hadn't noticed, and all you have to do is look at last year for a sterling example:

September gets the teams going and the Top 25 doesn't mean much.
October sorts out the Pretenders from the Contenders and the Top 25 starts taking on some import.
November plays the games to remember and determines the champions.
    December is the bowls.
    January is fine memories.

So J.D., suppose that after today's disasterous PAC-10 games, let's say Washington turns it around and wins the rest of their schedule? The Huskies would then end the season 9-3. Not bad, after a terrible start.

Now let's see who the Huskies could be beating:

Stanford, Arizona, Oregon State, Notre Dame, USC , Arizona State, UCLA, Washington State and Call.

It's then reasonable to conclude that if Washington did go 9-3 from this point forward, not only would they erase their embarrassing start, but they would be called the Cinderella team and be ranked at least in the Top 5 and be a BCS eligible team.

In the PAC-10 this is just as likely a scenario as any for the rest of this year. You see the problem with the PAC-10 isn't that it's dominated by USC or UCLA, as much as ABC, CBS and Fox Sports would like it to be for TV ratings; but no, rather its that any team in the PAC-10 has the talent and coaching to go all of the way in any given year. The question every year is which one will it be?

Do I think that Washington will do it this year? No, but they could and that's why it's so exciting. And that's why the PAC-10 is the toughest conference in the NCAA.

I think that the Pac-10 is a lot better than you give them credit for. Personally, I think the Big Ten is the most overrated, with Ohio State being the most overrated team in the country. Seriously. How can a team that has gotten blown out of the building in two straight BCS title games be considered an elite program? They do not even look like they belong on the same field as most of the non-Big Ten opponents they face. It hurts me to say it being an Illinois fan, but seriously. The Big Ten love just needs to stop.

The SEC is the most overrated conference. Miss. State lost to Louisiana Tech and Auburn only beat them 3-2? And Georgia only beat a South Carolina team that lost to Vanderbilt by 7? And Florida only beat a mediocre Miami team with a quarterback making his first ever collegiate start by 20? The SEC is probably better than the Pac-10 this year (USC and Oregon are the only good teams this year), but it is not head and shoulders above everybody else like ESPN would have us believe

"And Georgia only beat a South Carolina team that lost to Vanderbilt by 7?"

I believe Vanderbilt is in the SEC.

The overall depth of the SEC is unmatched, oh and not only the depth but the fact that their are 5 teams in the top 12...

and Mississippi State lost on the road, when they play at home its a completely different game.

      and Florida dominated Miami....

"Is the Pac-10 the Most Overrated Conference In College Football?"

Hard to say? Big Ten anyone?

    So far…

Ohio State has lost to USC.

    Michigan is totally lost.

Illinois lost – AGAIN – to Missouri who should have played in a game like the Rose Bowl last year instead of Illinois.

Wisconsin barely survived Fresno State (WAC!)

    Purdue went down to Oregon

Michigan State was beat by Cal

I would rank the conference like this:

    1. SEC
    2. Big 12 (closer to the SEC than people give the conference credit for... the problem is the horrible bottom feeders - Iowa State and Baylor - they aren't as good as the SEC bottom feeders).
    3. Pac 10 (The conference may be top heavy but deserves the number three spot).
    4. ACC (This conference isn't as bad as people think).
    5. Big 10 (WAY overrated! Who in this conference is any good?)
    6. Big East (But the Mountain West and the WAC aren't far behind)

I said that the Pac-10 is the 3rd best conference, but Pac-10 fans want to believe that they are on the same level as the SEC and Big-12 which they are not.

I think Big 10 is slightly better than the ACC considering the ACC has only 1 ranked team and the Big 10 has 4

This was not a good day for the Pac 10 but lets put this in perspective. Cal has already beaten Michigan St, UCLA beat Tennessee, Oregon beat Purdue, USC has beat Virginia and tOSU. Yes Wazzu sucks, Washington isn't anywhere close coming out of their rebuilding phase, Arizona is inconsistent (and Stoops has provent it's not easy to win in the Pac 10), Oregon State got killed by graduation and Stanford is well, Stanford. That leaves 5 teams that are legit programs right now and that's being a bit generous by putting UCLA in that group. Expect ASU to give Georgia everything they can handle and then when it comes to the bowl season you'll see the Pac 10 end up with one of the better records and be forced to answer the same questions about their strength as a conference yet again next fall.

I agree with ranking the Pac10 the 3rd best conference. I believe there isn't as much talent this year in the pac10 as usual, especially at QB. But it is the most exciting conference to watch by far. I usually fall asleep during the better SEC games. And the Pac10 doesn't play as many cupcakes, except Arizona.

And Oregon plays Boise State this weekend at Autzen Stadium. Another possibility for a shootout.

I love this time of year! The Pac 10 Rules!!!

    1. SEC
    2. Big 12
    3. Pac-10
    4. ACC
    5. Big Ten
    6. ...Bueller? Bueller?

    Notes:
-Seriously, the Big East shouldn't even be a BCS conference- it's got WVU and... who? Louisville & Rutgers, I guess... and after that I have trouble naming more Big East schools. I might put the Mountain West at #6 ahead of them- BYU just smoked UCLA royally...

-The ACC is better than the Big Ten. I'm still looking for a Big Ten team that's done well this season- granted it's only September. But hey, Maryland just beat Cal today... they can't be THAT bad, even if they did lose to Mid Tenn St. It means they are streaky... just more so than team that's actually GOOD is.

-The SEC is still the best conference in CFB. Even Vandy can make some noise out of conference, and sometimes it'll give really good teams a run for their money.

-The Big 12's elite teams can compete with their equivalents in the SEC, but their bottom teams function as free wins.

-The Pac-10 isn't that good, but the best program in the country has to count for something... move over, the whole SEC. I'm still waiting for a team to equal the Trojans- remember that USC should have gone to the title game last year instead of LSU, a 2-loss team. LSU & SEC loyalists are going to start a war for that comment: "we won the game, how can you argue that?" Well yes you did win that game, but as we just saw today, anybody could have beaten OSU.

USC lost TWO games last year, & could've lost at least two more. If USC is so good, let's see them regularly schedule the SEC teams. This is a nothing argument that won't be resolved until Southern Cal starts scheduling home-and-homes with the likes of Florida, Georgia, LSU and Auburn.

The original poster's laments about the Pac-10's day were laughable. Did he bother to watch any of the games where the Pac-10 teams laid an egg? TCU, which has a top 10 defense, dominated Stanford.

Auburn did, got swept. Florida might, that would be a great series. Georgia and LSU wouldn't, that's not what they do. Tennessee is one of the only SEC schools who will regularly schedule long-distance home-and-home OOC games, so props to them.

The sad thing is that USC and Oklahoma are likely to meet up in Miami (not necessarily because they're the best, but because they have the best chances to go undefeated), so we still won't get to see a big USC-SEC matchup anytime soon.

USC doesn't play OOC games with the SEC because SEC schools are bitches and won't sign home and homes with Pac 10 teams. Let's hear more about those LSU, Bama, Auburn and So Carolina non conference schedules.

First, the Stanford-TCU game wasn't "closer that the score suggested," quite the contrary. TCU dominated on both sides of the ball, outgained them 2-1 and had the ball for nearly 40 minutes. The only reason Stanford was in the game late was terrible special teams on TCU's part.

Second, considering the Mountain West is now 5-0 against the Pac-10, it's pretty ballsy to be so dismissive of the teams in that conference: TCU and UNM are "by no means good teams." TCU's been a top 25 program most of the last decade. UNM is middle of the pack in the conference, but beat middle-of the-Pac10 Arizona in Tucson last year.

BYU and Utah are legit top 25 teams. I'll be surprised if TCU isn't in the top 25 by the end of the year. And I'm willing to bet TCU'll keep its game against OU a lot closer than Washington did.

They (ACC, Big East & Big Ten) are the most over rated because they are actually considered so-called 'elite' conferences! What a joke.

And, how can a so-called Top 10 team like Auburn stay in the Top 10 after scoring THREE POINTS in a game against lowly Mississippi State? Hell, seems the SEC is highly over rated too! In fact, outside of beating up on a bunch of "directional schools" I have not been very impressed with that conference either. Have you forgotten that Tennessee who was in the SEC Championship game last season and beat Georgia (you know the pre-season #1) lost to UCLA who lost to BYU 59 - 0. So while you are downing the UCLA & the rest of the PAC-10, rightfully know as the "Conference of Champions," remember that pitiful UCLA squad beat the SEC's runner-up!

The fact is all it takes most conferences including the SEC has only one true national championship contender on a yearly basis. After watching the sorry performances of Auburn, Georgia and the Jr College level competition that LSU has been playing, we really do not know what type of teams the SEC is fielding this year. Remember, pre-season number one Georgia just got by a South Carolina team that was whipped by that perennial SEC powerhouse Vanderbilt last week!

There will not be a conclusion to this discussion until the clock reads 0:00 at the BCS Championship Game in Miami on January 8. And, the two teams in the US that have shown ANY championship qualities so far are U.S.C. & Oklahoma. Sorry Missouri fans, you will get your chance to prove me wrong soon enough one way or another in the Big-12.

I don't think the PAC-10 is overrated at all, their problem this week is that they were matched up with the Mountain West in 4 games, and the Mountain West is very likely the most underrated conference in College Football. I am not surprised that TCU, UNLV, New Mexico, or BYU won this weekend. I think the PAC-10's out of conference record would have looked pretty good this season if they hadn't had so many match-ups with the Mountain West.

"TCU is by no means a good team this year"

TCU has been a better team than most PAC-10 teams the last five years.

Who's the last PAC-10 team that has beaten OU in NORMAN (btw it has only happened twice under Stoops).

Who's the last PAC-10 team to beat Texas Teach?

Who the hell is John Doerring? He obviously is pretty clueless about the college football big picture. With a couple of exceptions, most teams in the PAC-10 have been mediocre for decades. And that TCU is not good? What planet is this guy from? They're about to break into the top 25 Johnny boy. That and 10 winning seasons in a row and a 10 or 11-2 record against BCS teams. Wake up.

Don't be so down on the Pac-10. There are some players on ASU, Stanford, Arizona who could play at TCU or BYU. Seriously, Stanford had a real good corner that may not start, but he could hang because he was fast enough. ASU was better than UNLV, but the loss and the talent level displayed put ASU as #4 in the Mtn West, at best. Maybe they'll be #2-3 in the P-10?

The Pac-10 has good teams and will have good teams in the future. But the delusions of greatness and superiority are what's so comical. Maybe I should be upset that BYU, TCU, and New Mexico are portrayed as also-rans here... but mostly I just feel sorry for people that can't see what was so plainly displayed yesterday. If I get upset when a crazy person talks crazy, wouldn't that make me crazy?

Even the "good ones," Cal and USC, don't have good records vs. the Mtn West for the games I have attended, but I may be biased. Cal barely beat Air Force last year in Ft. Worth. Thank goodness for Cal that the AF QB blew his knee out. It was a long time ago, but I think it is TCU that held USC to the lowest rushing total in its history (negative 20 yards or so in 1998).

Be careful Oregon, BSU might smack you in the mouth. I am not even sure if next Thursday's game between OSU and USC should be played for the sake of the safty of the Beavers...

    You are really dumb,aren't you?

Just so you know.. The Pac-10 is 11-7 vs. the SEC the past about 7 years. Take USC and LSU out of the eqation.. Then they're 7-3.

I live in Tennesesse. And all I hear about is the SEC. We can't help we play in a weak conference..But we make up for it by not scheduling the worst teams possible.

We play all BCS conference teams.

Alabama played pushovers all the beginning of the season..including Arkansas. And even Clemson a.k.a. The most overrated team in the nation.

    SEC:
    S-Schedule
    E-Easy
    C-Cupckakes

yes that is bc they decide to play the weak teams of the SEC...If your going to line up the PUS-10 against the SEC you are out of your mind...There is ONLY one team in the pus-10 and its USC. Who the hell are u going to put up against, ALABAMA, GEORGIA, FLORIDA,LSU, AUBURN,TENNESSEE?
Now talking about the weak early schedule..if you had to play the gauntlet of a schedule the sec played you need those games...they dont get arizona (ha) ASU (HA) oregon, etc.. Tennessee is one of the worst teams in the sec this year and it took Cal to overtime to beat them...sad..PLUS AFTER SURVIVING THE SEC SCHEDULE, THEY HAVE TO PLAY A SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!! I would love to see usc play in the sec for one season...that would be comical...they'll actually see what football is all about..Now if you have been watching football this year..you have seen the sec and big 12 beating eachother and swapping sopts in the top 10 and look at usc sitting out on the west coast ranked 6th. its a complete joke... So one last question if Georgia would loose one more game to say Florida and usc wins out, you think usc should be ahead of them?
