Positions Battles and Breadowns|Camp Time!

This is a very exciting time for an NFL fan.  All we are really going to see is reports of guys running around on a practice field.  It’s more than that for us, isn’t it?  Roster battles, hold outs, injuries.  Most important is that it is a sure sign that the season is right on top of us.  Seems just like yesterday we were enjoying the new streamlined NFL Draft.  Let’s have a look around the league at some NFL Jabber to wet our whistles a little bit…

Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune wonders if this may be the best Saints roster ever.  He gives a position by position run down on the battles set for camp.  Good stuff.

Troy Smith’s three INT’s and a botched snap (out of five plays) were the spotlight of Ravens camp.

Secondary coach Chuck Pagano didn’t look 47 years old when he lined up as a cornerback and intercepted Smith’s pass along the left sideline. Pagano began to run before lateraling the ball and avoiding a tackle.

The Boston Herald names Lawerence Maroney as the guy who is “ready for lift off” in Patriots camp.

The third-year back hasn’t crossed that threshold to elite runner just yet; he’s had similar numbers his first two seasons. For the most part, he’s been hampered by injuries, tentativeness at times, and an offense that thinks pass first. The first-round pick, however, did quiet some critics with his performances down the stretch last season, running well during the bad weather games and for much of the postseason. This season will be an important one for Maroney, who has the potential to really break out, especially with a healthy Sammy Morris riding shotgun.

The Vikings seem to be shaping up to be a threat in the NFC looking at the position breakdowns…if it were not for that pesky QB problem.

The Colts think that Peyton Manning will be back for the opener, maybe even in the preseason.

“I have talked to Peyton and we’re just following the doctors instructions right now,” Dungy said. “I’m hoping for four weeks, but if he’s truly out six weeks, I think it will be hard to keep him out. However it goes, he’ll be ready when he comes back.”

Kevin Boss is getting all the spotlight but the Giants have five guys looking to take the starting TE job.
