Jevan Snead's Decision to Bolt Ole Miss For the NFL Draft Was Just Plain Dumb

Larry BurtonApr 29, 2010

Larry Burton (Panama City Beach, Fla.) Whatever the case was, be it bad advice or just a big head, Jevan Snead, just like in the picture to the right, tripped and fell flat on his face during the recent draft.

Jevan, people leave college early because there is a great need for their services in the NFL. Why did you think somebody wanted you? Was it bad advice or just your big head?

Apparently, since you went undrafted, nobody wanted you and nobody cared to invest in your "talent." Maybe they didn't want to put up with a prima donna who seemed to always take his ball and leave if things didn't go his way.

You left Texas because you thought you were too good to sit on the bench behind Colt McCoy. Obviously, you weren't.

Had you stayed, you would have basked in the spotlight of a national championship game, taking over for McCoy when he went down, and would be coming back this year with much media hoopla and all eyes on you.

This was just the start of your bad judgement.

But you thought you were too good so you left to go to Ole Miss where you sat on the bench for a year and rusted. When you finally did play, quite frankly, you weren't consistent.

You did have some good moments, but you had some bad ones too, and throwing for over half as many interceptions as touchdowns didn't help.

Then, for your Jr. season, a season where you were supposed to be the SEC elite quarterback, you were simply terrible for most of the year. Why you thought last year's play made you a hot NFL commodity is beyond me. Had you not had Dexter McCluster to bail you out, it would have been a miserable year indeed.

Sure, you are big and tall and you can throw it 60 yards down the field; but so could NFL Hall of fame linebacker Dick Butkus, and just like you, he didn't seem to able to throw it near a receiver either.

Two questions come to mind, were you jumping a sinking ship at Ole Miss since Dexter McCluster was leaving, or did you buy the load of hooey that CBS Sports writer Pete Prisco tried to sell saying you might be the number one pick of the 2010 draft? I guess you're the only person who can't evaluate talent.

Had you accepted the fact that you are a talented quarterback with some bad quirks that needed to be worked out and stayed at Ole Miss or Texas and actually worked on them instead of your NFL draft day acceptance speech, things may have gone differently.

At least you did the NCAA a favor however; now any big headed self absorbed player who thinks he should jump to the NFL and skip his senior year will have you to look at and at least wonder if he's doing the right thing.

Thank you for falling on your face and giving us all an example of how bad advice and a big head can cause the downfall of a player with more potential than polish.
