NFL Draft 2010: Eric Berry Brings It All to The Table For the Kansas City Chiefs

Bill RobbinsApr 26, 2010

There seems to be a significant buzz heading into the 2010 NFL season for the Kansas Chiefs. The man responsible for that buzz is former Tennessee safety Eric Berry.

Kansas City picked Berry at #5 overall with their 1st pick in the 2010 NFL Draft last Thursday night. Not only was it a great pick, it could end up being one of the best picks ever in the history of the franchise.

The Chiefs will be getting so much more than a great football player in Berry. They will also be getting an excellent person of high character, who gives his all every practice, every game, and also in every aspect of his life.

Lets run through the resume of Mr. Berry real quick. He was the Georgia High School player of the year in 2006 and also a 3-time All-American in his time at Tennessee, not to mention he was named a Unanimous All-American for two of those years. Lets also not forget that he was the #1 ranked CB in the nation for his High School class of 2007.

He picked off 14 passes in college, and is also second all-time with 492 interception return yards for a career. And oh by the way, he only committed one, yes one penalty at safety in 38 career starts for the Vols.

The accolades and statistics do not lie in Berry's case, he is phenomenal in the secondary, and also a Quarterback's nightmare. If you don't believe me, just ask Tim Tebow about that one.

Berry has been compared to Ed Reed and also Troy Polamalu for his style of play. Personally, I think he is more of an Ed Reed/Bob Sanders combination. Any way you look at it, he is bound for stardom in the NFL.

As if Berry's physical talents aren't enough, he might have even better character. He was the captain of his college team from his sophomore to junior year and some reports were that he would stay late the night before game-day on Saturday and help the managers polish the helmets, as he wanted to see it from their perspective.

On top of all of this, he had a 3.75 GPA at Tennessee while studying Denistry, couple this with the fact that Berry will wear the #29 this upcoming season to honor a former teammate who suffered an injury so severe that he has hardly any use of one arm.

With strong character, comes strong leadership, and Berry provides a lot of this as you can see. Don't be surprised if you hear Berry taking charge of the Chiefs secondary this year even as a rookie.

Eric Berry will be a dominant force this year in the Chiefs secondary. Quarterbacks, Running Backs and Receivers alike will have to think twice before they go through the middle of the KC Defense, with #29 back there ready to lay the wood.

Kudos to Scott Pioli and Todd Haley for drafting this wonderful player and person to come help this team. Sit back and enjoy the ride this season Chiefs fans, this could be a fun one.
