What Should the Minnesota Timberwolves Do If They Get the Top Pick?
The Timberwolves have a lot of options in the offseason. A lot of these options depend on the draft. The Wolves have a 20 percent chance of getting the No. 1 pick, highly projected to be John Wall from Kentucky.
Here's one way the Timberwolves could go about the offseason if they do get the No. 1 pick.
1. Draft John Wall
Yes, the Timberwolves picked four point guards last year. Yes, we have two on the team, and one in Spain. But John Wall is too good to pass up.
If we got the No. 1 pick, John would be the new centerpiece of the franchise, just like we saw in Chicago with Derrick Rose (who just led his team into the playoffs, and beat the Cavaliers...).
Plus, many experts call Wall a better version of Rose.
2. Trade for Danny Granger
This is a tough one. Danny was in many trade rumors to be swapped with Al Jefferson in the middle of the season, and that never happened. Since then, Al has gone down in a bit of trade value. But that's okay.
I'd say just give Indiana what they want.
Trade Jefferson and Flynn to the Pacers, make the trade work with the cap restrictions, and add Gomes to the trade if the Pacers see fit.
This trade would be in the Pacers' hands, but anything we can do to get Danny to Minnesota would be ideal.
3. Get a Replacement Center
If Jefferson is traded, the Wolves will have to fill his spot, which is relatively the starting center position. David Lee and Nikola Pekovic would be the two best candidates for his spot.
If the Timberwolves can gain cap room in an Indiana trade, they'll have enough money to sign Lee to a large contract, and he'll be playing next to some star players.
Pekovic would also be a good choice, simply because he has a lot of potential to become a star.
A backup to those two would be a trade, or resign Milicic.
4. Fill the Gaps in the Roster
Technically this would come sequentially before steps two and three, but the Wolves should think about drafting their bench with the picks they have from Charlotte and Utah.
They could scoop up a nice SF like Xavier Henry, Gordon Hayward, or Paul George with one or both of those picks.
They may also need another big such as Solomon Alabi, or Patrick Patterson (if he slips a little).
If they can't draft that bit of success, then sign it. They shouldn't shake up the parts of the roster that aren't necessary by doing a lot of trades.
The Wolves would have a lot of upside with the No. 1 pick, and trading away Brewer, Love, Sessions, Ellington, or Hollins would just funk with the chemistry too much.
5. Find the Blend
Make sure this squad works well together. I mean, the way I set it up, it would look a bit like this:
- C - Nikola Pekovic/David Lee
- PF - Kevin Love
- SF - Danny Granger
- SG - Corey Brewer
- PG - John Wall
- bC - Solomon Alabi
- bPF - Ryan Hollins
- bSF - Xavier Henry
- bSG - Wayne Ellington
- bPG - Ramon Sessions
That seems like a full, competitive squad to me. The good news is that the only things that are unrealistic are Danny Granger, and John Wall, and neither of those are that out of reach.
If the Wolves can get the No. 1 pick, or just John Wall in general, there's a lot of good things that could happen, and this is just one of them.
