Cowboys Take Bryant, Could Mean The End For Williams or Crayton

Derek MajorApr 23, 2010

For the first time in over 10 years, the Cowboys (Jerry Jones) traded up and took wide receiver Dez Bryant with their first round pick.Ā The Cowboys traded with the New England Patriots to move up to number 24 in the first round.

The Cowboys gave the Patriots their 27th pick and their third round pick (90th overall) and the Patriots gave the Cowboys their fourth round pick (119th overall)Ā

The Cowboys had more pressing needs than receiver, which include safety and offensive line, but Jones, who runs the war room for the Cowboys didn't want to miss out on getting Bryant and he thought the Ravens would take Bryant,Ā  when he fell to the Ravens at 25.

Bryant now becomes the only receiver on the Cowboys roster except Roy Williams (who was drafted by the Lions) that's been drafted before the fifth round.Ā

The question now is which receiver is in danger now that the Cowboys drafted Bryant?Ā

Jones stated last night in his post-draft press conference that Williams will be with the Dallas Cowboys next season. "You're going ask me will is Roy starting...the answer's yes, does Miles start...the answer's yes, at least from my perspective."

If this statement stands true, this is bad news for Patrick Crayton. HeĀ could be used as trade bait for the Cowboys to possibly move up in the draft or to acquire another pick in the draft.Ā

Jones has already stated they don't plan to bring Bryant along slowly and most likely he will take over punt return duties.

"The plan is for Bryant to play now." Ā

Crayton hasn't underachieved in his time with the Cowboys, but has never really stood out. Last season his numbers were more productive than Williams but it was Miles Austin that stole the show.Ā

In Wade Phillips' first season in Dallas, Crayton had a great season, but all that was forgotten when he dropped a first down pass in the divisional playoff against the Giants. He also pulled up on his route late in the same game when Romo had Crayton in the back of the end zone.Ā

If Crayton is still in Dallas at the end of the draft, then it's Williams who's in danger. Crayton is at the very least reliable. Romo trusts him to run his routes hard, get open and catch the ball.Ā

Romo does not trust Williams to run his routes hard, get open, and most importantly catch the ball. HeĀ stayedĀ away from him at the end of the game against the Saints last season. He stayed away from himĀ completely in the regular season finale against theĀ Eagles.Ā

If Romo and Bryant show they have chemistry before the season starts, and Williams is still having trouble getting looks from Romo, you might see Williams on the bench and Crayton with Bryant on the field.Ā
