Gradkowski To Have Surgery, Oakland Raiders Sign Kyle Boller

The Oakland Raiders have signed veteran QB Kyle Boller.  He was drafted 19th overall by the Ravens in 2003.  He had his best season of his career in '04 passing for 2559 yards, 14 TDs (1 rush), and 11 ints.  He was supposed to be the Ravens franchise QB but things didn't work out as planned and he spent last season with the Rams.  Can he possibly resurrect his career in Oakland?  Not a likely scenario but it definately can happen and it wouldn't be the first time the Raiders brought in a veteran QB who was a former 1st round pick and was written off as a franchise QB in the NFL.  That guy ended up delivering a couple of Super Bowls.  Like I said though, "not a likely scenario."

Does this signing mean the end of Bruce Gradkowski or Charlie Frye?  We definately will not keep four QBs on the 53 man roster.  Bruce Gradkowski is supposed to be in a competition for the starting position so you would think he is safe.  He tore a pectoral muscle while lifting weights and is scheduled to have surgery on Friday.  The recovery time is about four weeks so he should be ready for training camp.  Charlie Frye's spot may not be as secure, or is it?  Could it be possible that if Gradkowski doesn't clearly outperform Russell through training camp and preseason that he will be released?

The signing of Boller might also mean that the Raiders aren't planning on drafting a QB next week.  There have been rumors that the Raiders are high on Tim Tebow and would take him in the 2nd round if he is available.  The Raiders also have expressed interest in a few late round QB prospects and Mel Kiper Jr. has us selecting Jimmy Clausen if he's on the board.  I don't think it's going to happen but it wouldn't shock me.

Well that's it Raider Nation.  The QB situation has been shook up a little bit with Gradkowski's injury/surgery and the signing of former first round pick Kyle Boller.
