Kevin Kolb, The Future Of The Philadelphia Eagles
On April 4, 2010 Donovan Mcnabb was traded to the Washington Redskins for draft picks, making Kevin Kolb the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.Ā A few of you know Kolb's history, but most don't know much, if any at all, about him.Ā Kevin addressed the national media in a press conference, and said all the right things.Ā One huge question still lingers.Ā Is Kolb the future?
Kevin was born August 24th, 1984 in Victoria, Texas.Ā He attended Stephenville High School in Stephenville, Texas.Ā While there, he was a two-time district MVP.Ā His senior year he completed 206 of 321 passes for 3,357 yards and 29 touchdowns.Ā In 2003, Kolb was awarded the starting quarterback position for the University of Houston.Ā During his tenure there, he passed for 12,964 yards and 85 touchdowns.Ā In his senior year he threw 30 touchdowns and merely 4 interceptions.Ā His scouting report leading up to the draft called him "one of the most prolific passers in NCAA history".
Kevin's stats are great coming out of college, but does he have what it takes to be a starting quarterback in this league?Ā If you ask most scouts and head coaches, they talk of how good he is.Ā The truth is, only the Eagles really know the answer to this question.Ā In his first two NFL starts, Kolb became the first NFL quarterback to pass for over 300 yards in his first two starts.Ā He has the confidence of his teammates, especially his wide receiving core.Ā Head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg believe he is their franchise QB for the next ten years.Ā If they didn't, they would not have traded a future Hall of Fame quarterback away.
Kolb's mechanics are very good.Ā He has a very quick release.Ā His passes are tight and accurate.Ā His command in the huddle is outstanding.Ā His Wonderlic score was above average, but not extremely high.Ā In Reid's west coast offense, Kolb is a perfect fit.Ā He can through the slant, which is something Donovan struggled with.Ā He is very agile, and can pass while on the move.Ā Some scouts doubted his arm strength coming out of Houston, but after watching his limited play this past year, it seems that they were wrong.
Kevin has the all the tools to have himself a very rewarding pro career.Ā I think only time will tell, but my hopes are high for this young man.Ā My advice for Eagles fans: Give Kolb some time to prove himself.Ā There will be some bumps early on, but I feel he will be a very solid QB for years to come.Ā So don't give him the full Philly treatment right away.
