Lions Tipping Their Hand on First-Round Plan?
Dave FriezeApr 8, 2010
I wrote earlier that I felt that Okung was the target, but after the brilliant Sims trade, I just can not see that happening with our first pick now.Ā But, Ā I just canĀ not shake the feeling thatĀ one of the two things are happening inside Allen Park (or both): The Lions have a strong possible tradingĀ partner to move down from the #2 spot, or they are just notĀ that excited with Suh or McCoy.
Of course I could be way off and the Lions are throwing some serious smoke-screens, but here is what we know.Ā 1) The addition of DT Corey Williams 2) The pursuit of DT Anthony Hargrove 3) The recent rumors of acquiring DT Albert HaynesworthĀ 4) Mayhew's statement that people were incorrect of their assessment of what directionĀ the Lions were heading.Ā

2025 Draft Picks Ready For Leap šø
So, what are the Lions up to?Ā Think back to last year when the Stafford/Curry debate raged on, both Mayhew and Schwartz tipped their hand and spoke about the importance of a franchise quarterback.Ā Some felt it was a move to prepare the masses in Detroit thatĀ Stafford was going to be the pickĀ over the fans overwhelming chose of Curry.Ā Is it possible that Mayhew is softening the blow againĀ to derail the SUH trainĀ in Detroit?Ā Last week we got this tidbit from Mayhew, "I feel confident that we'll have an opportunity to move back". Ā With this piece from Mayhew and the concentrated effort of picking up a provenĀ defensive tackle,Ā all signs point to the Lions having aĀ strong possible trading partnerĀ who have their eye on Suh?Ā My best guess is one that has been talked about, the Kansas City Chiefs.Ā TheyĀ are far from pleased withĀ their 5th overall 2008Ā pick Glenn Dorsey, his game does not fit the 3-4 defense that was put in place afterĀ Dorsey was drafted byĀ Gunther Cunningham's 4-3 defense.Ā This is almost the sameĀ storyĀ asĀ Corey Williams not fitting into Cleveland's newly incorporated 3-4 defensive system.Ā Ā
Seems like a win-win to me...Chiefs pick up a desperately needed defensive tackle that fits their scheme, while unloading Dorsey's high contract (5 years/$51 million, $23 million guaranteed).Ā Lions pick-up a classic 4-3 defensive tackle that knows Cunningham's defensive scheme and the Lions drop back to #5, a spot that allows them to get an extremely talented player such as: Eric Berry.Ā The immediate response is the LionsĀ don't need to draft another safety this high.Ā Ā Just considerĀ that Nnamdi Asomugha, Raiders all-pro cornerback played free safety all through college and the beginning of his NFL career beforeĀ switchingĀ to cornerback.Ā AND, I am not the only one with this thinking, here's a good read fromĀ Bucky Brooks from NFL.com, discussing a possible transition to cornerback due toĀ Berry's ability.
