Brett Favre Interception, Referees, Send the New Orleans Saints To Miami

Bob WarjaJan 24, 2010

If this is the last pass ever thrown by Brett Favre, it will likely stick in his craw for the rest of his life, and deservedly so, for it was one of the worst decisions ever made by a Hall of Fame QB in such a critical game.

That interception, combined with some very questionable referee calls in overtime, doomed the Minnesota Vikings and they will go yet another year without ever winning a Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints take a trip to their first-ever Super Bowl, thanks in part to bad decisions by Favre and the refs.

A critical pass interference call in overtime on a ball that was clearly uncatchable put the Saints in position to kick a game-winning field goal later in the series.

On a subsequent play, the refs reviewed a catch that seemed to have been trapped by the Saints wideout, only to rule in favor of the Saints.

Despite that, the Vikings have only themselves to blame for this loss. They didn't protect the football, and with the game on the line, Favre, for reasons unknown, decided to force a ball into coverage when he had a running lane in front of him had he only made a better decision.

If Favre had tucked the ball in and ran, it would have set up a makeable field goal to end the game in regulation. Instead, the horrendous brain cramp forced overtime and it was goodbye Vikings.

The somewhat ironic thing about Favre's terrible decision late in the game is that this had been perhaps his best season in pro football in terms of protecting the ball.

Favre had thrown only seven interceptions all season long. So what was he doing making such an ill-advised throw on third down with the final seconds ticking away in regulation? Again, I don't have a clue.

It was an exciting game, to be sure, but the Vikings should have won. Not to take anything away from the Saints, but everything that could go wrong did go wrong, especially toward the end.

So this may end the career of the gunslinger, and if so, what an awful way to go out. Favre spent too much time on his back and then decides for all his hard work, he will just fling the ball into coverage. Wow.

Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints? Certainly not Brett Favre.
