Dallas-Minnesota: Brett Favre Shines, Tony Romo Beat Up as Vikings Roll

Derek MajorJan 17, 2010

The Cowboys headed into Minnesota confident they could compete with the Vikings, but the game proved to be much different as Romo and the Cowboys were blown out 34-3.

The Cowboys started the game well and got inside the Vikings 40-yard line on their first two possessions, but a fumble and a missed field goal stalled both drives. Meanwhile, the Vikings were struggling until the end of the quarter.

With four minutes left in the first, the Vikings got to the Cowboys 47-yard line. On a blitz, Favre threw the ball up for Sidney Rice, who was one-on-one with safety Gerald Sensabaugh. Rice caught the ball one handed around Sensabaugh, who got his head turned around late, and ran in for a TD.

After a Shaun Suisham field goal, the Vikings once again drove down the field to the Dallas 16-yard line, where Favre found Rice as he was scrambling around for a TD to make the score 14-3.

The Vikings added a field goal before halftime and neither team scored in the third.

The Vikings hit a field goal to start the fourth and on their next drive, Favre hit Rice again for a 45-yard TD, beating Mike Jenkins who fell after Rice made the catch.

The Vikings added one more garbage time TD to end the game, which upset Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking.

Tony Romo (22 for 35, 198 yards, one INT, two lost fumbles) was hit constantly and never got into a rhythm. Romo was sacked six times and was hit ten times. He never could get in tune to find Miles Austin (four catches, 34 yards) and he targeted Roy Williams once for an incompletion.

Jason Witten had a good game with ten catches for 98 yards, but no other receiver had more than 34 yards.

The running game was successful in the first half as Felix Jones (14 rushes, 69 yards)Ā  moved the ball, but the Cowboys weren't effective with their draws. Marion Barber saw some action with eight carries but had just 14 yards.

The defense did a good job containing Adrian Peterson (23 carries, 63 yards) but couldn't stop Brett Favre and Sidney Rice; the two combined for 141 yards and three TDs.

Favre was pressured and sacked three time; he also had trouble getting to his receivers as every receiver except Rice had under 40 yards.

Now the Vikings head to New Orleans while the Cowboys begin their offseason, with the first order being whether or not to exercise the option on Coach Wade Phillips.

Extra Points

-Flozell Adams left the game in the second quarter with a calf injury and didn't return. Doug Free finished the game in Adams place.

-Shaun Suisham missed two 49-yard FG attempts, one in the first quarter and one in the third.

-Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards had had five tackles, four for a loss, three sacks, and six hits on Romo.
