Oakland Raiders: Are We Missing Something Here?

Honor Warren Wells TheTorchJan 17, 2010

There are scenes in movies of artist who are displeased with their product or artwork. In anger, they tear the canvass, splash the paint, and destroy that which they created.

Why do they do so? I imagine that the product or artwork is not up to the level of excellence desired by the creator of the art. He becomes angry. With intention, he destroys his own creation.

Are we missing something here? Could it be that Al Davis has an anger so deeply embedded in the recesses of his soul, that he is acting out a plan to destroy his own creation, the Oakland Raiders?

What else would justify his so-called stubbornness, his refusal to change and to relinquish control?

Also, there are examples of people who are heads of households. When they are depressed because of a loss of, say, a job, they destroy the entire family.

There are cases of animals who know that their offspring are ill, deformed or dysfunctional, and the animal will destroy that offspring.

Not to be morbid, but there are men who kill their pregnant wives. Is it symbolic of destroying that which can produce the offspring? Terminating the mother and the child, then terminates the line of successors (the future) that would come forth from the sperm the man planted in the womb of his mate.

If what Davis clings to is "killing" the worth and future of the Oakland Raiders, and if, indeed, Davis is some type of genius, then maybe (and I do mean maybe), he intends to destroy his "love child", the Oakland Raiders.

Could it be that Davis does not trust us? Some say he is having difficulty deciding who he can trust.

Is it that he does not trust anyone to carry on the Oakland Raiders persona?

Can someone answer: Are we missing something here?

Perhaps research needs to be done to uncover why there are 54 inactive franchises in the United States. It looks like about 86 professional football teams have been established in the United States. Of those 86, 54 have become defunct.

This means that of the 86 professional football teams established in the United States, 62.7 percent of them failed. Also, of the 86 teams established, 37.2 percent of them continue to exist.

Thirty-two teams are in the NFL to date. Of those 32, five have changed names and/or location.

Who are the five active teams that have changed names (and location or ownership)? They are the Houston Oilers, Cleveland Rams, Oakland, Baltimore, and Chicago.

The present ranks of the five teams who have changed names:

Houston/Titans                 19

Cleveland/St. Louis            25

Oakland                           32

Baltimore/Indianapolis         15

Chicago-Arizona                23

Only one of the teams, the Baltimore Ravens ranks 15th, which is in the top 50 percent of the list of 32 NFL teams.

Earlier in the history of professional football in America, two teams shutdown in 1929 and 1949, respectively, after changing the name of their franchise. They were the Pottsville Maroons, and the Chicago Hornets.

What was the style of ownership and management style of those teams which became inactive or that changed locations and franchise names?

More research in this area might give us insight into what is happening with our beloved franchise, the Oakland Raiders. And yes, the Oakland Raiders have changed the name and location once. Is it a possible alternative for the future?

You tell me. But, I ask you, again, "Are we missing something here?"
