Time To Release Portis

"Like all players, as they get older, the key is how they work in the off season program, and what they do to make themselves better as all veterans. "I've been around some veterans that have been very successful, and all of the sudden they quit working out, and as a running back you can fall off of a cliff. If you make a commitment that you're going to be the best that you can possibly be, or you've got the passion and the work ethic to be as good as you can possibly be, then you've got a chance to be something special." That's what new Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, thoughts were on Clinton Portis as he was introduced Wednesday at Redskins park.

Portis over the years has never been a team player, he is all about himself and will do anything to cause a distraction to the football team.He is uncoachable player and has been that way his entire career. In Denver Shanahan coached Portis for two years, and he was successful scoring 29 touchdowns and was named NFL offensive rookie of the year and was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2003. But Portis bad attitude and me first mentality, caused Shanahan to trade the disgruntled running back to Washington in 2004 in exchange for Corner back Champ Bailey.

When Portis landed In Washington, Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs spoiled him by letting him practice when he wants and letting him do anything he wanted.When Jim Zorn arrived, he and Portis had disagreements and back in 2008 in a game against the Detroit Lions Portis and Zorn was seen on camera arguing back and fourth. This was seen as Dan Snyder the team's owner as ''Cliton being Cliton and no punishment was handed to Portis.

Portis in eight games this season, looked like his body had given up on him and  looked  as If he had nothing else left in the tank. Portis rushed for 494 yards this season and only one touchdown. In week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons,Portis suffered a concussion and was sideline for the remainder of the season.

Now that Shanahan is the head coach, he will make sure there are no distractions on the team and will make sure he builds a team that can compete in the 2010 season and beyond.
