Russell Westbrook Sets NBA Record for Points in Triple-Double
Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook totaled 57 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in Wednesday's 114-106 comeback victory over the Orlando Magic.
His scoring output was the highest in NBA history for a player while recording a triple-double, per the Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN Stats & Info). James Harden and Wilt Chamberlain previously claimed the record, totaling 53 points in their respective tilts.
In addition to notching the scoring record, Westbrook also rallied the club from a 21-point deficit in the second half of the contest to win, marking his 38th triple-double of his campaign. He remains three short of tying Oscar Robertson for the most in a single season in NBA history and has seven games left to record them.
The star floor general averages 31.8 points, 10.6 rebounds and 10.4 assists on the season, giving him a legitimate shot at averaging a triple-double. His play has also kept the Thunder competitive in the Western Conference.
Westbrook has commanded Oklahoma City to a 43-31 record on the season following Kevin Durant's departure for the Golden State Warriors in the offseason. The team ranks sixth in the Western Conference, just one game back of the Los Angeles Clippers for the fifth spot and 2.5 games clear of the Memphis Grizzlies.
If the regular season ended today, the Thunder would square off against the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs. Oklahoma City has lost three of its four contests against them this season, but stands a chance at moving up another spot to instead face the Utah Jazz. Westbrook and the Thunder own a 3-1 record against the Jazz this season, presenting a much more favorable first-round matchup.
