Lorenzo Alexander, Bills Agree to 2-Year Contract

Rob GoldbergMar 11, 2017

After a breakout season from Lorenzo Alexander, the Buffalo Bills have decided to retain the linebacker.

According to Bills sideline reporter Sal Capaccio, the 33-year-old will return to the Bills on a two-year deal. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Alexander's new contract is worth $9 million total, including $4.1 million guaranteed.

The linebacker confirmed he was headed back to upstate New York on Saturday with a post on Twitter:

Alexander told reporters this is likely to be the last contract of his career.

Alexander is coming off by far the best season of his career, starting all 16 games while tallying 12.5 sacks, tied for third in the NFL. He went to the Pro Bowl and was named Defensive MVP after totaling eight tackles and an interception.

This was a major surprise for a veteran who spent nine years across three organizations while making 16 total starts in that stretch. He was named a Pro Bowler in 2012 as a special teamer, but he rarely made an impact defensively and had only nine career sacks coming into the 2016 season.

Still, he took advantage of his one-year deal with the Bills to become a sought-after free agent.

Although there were some questions about how he would fit in Buffalo after the head coaching change from Rex Ryan to Sean McDermott, Alexander remained interested in signing a long-term deal.

"I would love to go back," the linebacker said on SiriusXM NFL Radio (via Alex Marvez of Sporting News). "It's a great football city, a blue-collar town and family oriented. It's right up my alley."

The Bills will now hope the 2016 campaign wasn't a fluke as Alexander attempts build off his success. With plenty of returning talent and a new scheme, Buffalo will hope to break through with its first playoff appearance since 1999.
