Prince Amukamara, Chicago Bears Agree to 1-Year Contract

Alec NathanMar 10, 2017

Prince Amukamara is headed to his third team in as many seasons.

Following a rough five-year stretch with the New York Giants and a solid 2016 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Amukamara will sign with the Chicago Bears, per Dan Graziano of ESPN. Amukamara confirmed it's a one-year deal, per Josina Anderson of ESPN.

Amukamara was steady—albeit unspectacular—during his first year in Jacksonville, but the 27-year-old gave the Jaguars some solid depth and peace of mind at cornerback considering they rolled out a new-look secondary that featured rookie Jalen Ramsey opposite 2015 free-agent signee Davon House.

All told, Amukamara appeared in 14 games—including 12 starts—and came up with 49 total tackles and six defended passes over that span.

And even though those numbers don't jump off the page, the fact that he was able to suit up for 14 games after missing 25 in five seasons with the New York Giants represented a major step forward.

"My stats, for sure, aren’t where I want them to be or I’m sure where any cornerback would want them to be," Amukamara said, per ESPN.com's Mike DiRocco. "However, I still think selfishly I put some good stuff on film and done some good stuff. I think it was huge to just be able to show that I am durable and I can play this game if I'm healthy."

There have been a number of changes in Chicago this offseason, with Mike Glennon taking over as the team's quarterback and superstar wideout Alshon Jeffery joining the Philadelphia Eagles. Amukamara is a new face who will help bolster the secondary while the Bears and head coach John Fox look to get back on track during this time of transition.

Amukamara's injury history makes him something of a risk moving forward—especially if he's going to be counted on in a starting capacity—but he proved down the stretch in 2016 that he has the skills necessary to clamp down on the boundary and provide steady shutdown stylings in doses.
