Seantrel Henderson Suspended for Drug Policy Violation: Latest Details, Reaction
Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson has been suspended for the second time this season because of another violation of the NFL's drug policy.
On Tuesday, the Bills announced that the league had suspended Henderson for 10 games.
Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News reported on Nov. 24 that Henderson missed the team's Nov. 24 practice because of an apparent doctor's appointment, but a source told the outlet that he was facing another suspension.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport confirmed the details on Nov. 27 and added Henderson is appealing the ruling.
Henderson previously served a four-game suspension in September for the use of medicinal marijuana to treat Crohn's disease.
On Wednesday, Bills head coach Rex Ryan told reporters that it's an "assumption" to say Henderson was suspended again for marijuana use. Ryan added that nobody knows the reason and that the NFL doesn't reveal the reasoning.
The 24-year-old University of Miami product was diagnosed with the inflammatory bowel condition last December. He told Matt Porter of the Palm Beach Post in August that there was initial concern he wouldn't be able to play football again:
"You can't take anything for granted. Last year could have been the last year I'd ever play football. At one point, the doctors were saying I'd have to have that ileostomy bag on the rest of my life. My intestines were so poisonous on the inside. But I healed up really fast. I'm lucky to be working out and looking toward playing again.
"
After the prior NFL punishment, he discussed the lack of support from the league despite what medical professionals were telling him about the use of marijuana for people in his situation, per Skurski.
"I've got doctors telling me this is the No. 1 medicine that would help your disease," Henderson said in October. "You try to tell that to the league and it seems like they didn't care too much."
The Bills selected the Minnesota native in the seventh round of the 2014 draft. He was a highly touted prospect coming out of high school and during his collegiate career with the Hurricanes, but his stock slipped after he admitted to marijuana use that resulted in three suspensions.
Henderson started 26 games over his first two years in Buffalo. His first appearance of the 2016 campaign came last week against the Cincinnati Bengals as the Bills started searching for alternatives to a struggling Jordan Mills at right tackle.
