Derek Carr Contract: Latest News, Rumors on Negotiations with Raiders

Raiders Reportedly Will Offer Carr Massive Contract

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reported Sunday that the Raiders are prioritizing a contract extension for Carr this offseason. According to the report, "a league source expects that deal 'to be Luck-ish,' a reference to the five-year, $123 million contract that Andrew Luck signed with Indianapolis last summer." 

Carr, 25, has been superb in 2016, throwing for 2,321 yards, 17 touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 66.3 percent of his passes. Oakland, in turn, has raced out to a 6-2 start and is tied for first in the AFC West with the Denver Broncos.

The Raiders are fifth in yards per game (401.6) and sixth in points per contest (26.9), and Carr's play has been the primary factor. In turn, he has emerged as an MVP candidate, as the Good Morning Football crew discussed on the NFL Network:

But as Schefter noted, signing Carr to an extension this offseason will be important on a number of fronts. Superstar linebacker Khalil Mack will be a free agent come 2018, and the Raiders may need to have the franchise tag available to keep him from hitting the open market.

Securing Carr's long-term contract now would grant Oakland that security. And ideally, the Raiders will be able to keep their young core of players signed for the foreseeable future, with wideout Amari Cooper set to become a free agent in 2019.

At some point, Oakland may not be able to sign one of its young talents. Football writer Cian Fahey doubts it will be any of the aforementioned trio, though:

Carr will be the priority. He has been a revelation in 2016 and has given hope to a franchise that hasn't had a winning season since 2002, which was also the last time the Raiders reached the postseason. The team, in turn, will reward the face of the franchise.
