Congrats, Capitals Fans: You Are Now My Least Favorite in All of Sports

I confess I'm a Washington Capitals fan, and I have been for quite some time.

I could spout off my credentials by talking about some of my favorite Caps from the past, but let's face it, in this day of Google searching anyone can make that claim. You'll just have to take my word for it.

Lately, though, there has been an influx of people wearing Caps jerseys in D.C. This isn't really a bad thing; as a Caps fan I like seeing this once small fanbase grow.

However, there has been a downside.

Washington D.C. is full of bandwagon jumpers. This city is (and probably always will be) the Redskins' city. However, in lean times other teams have stolen fans. The Cowboys accomplished this in the mid-'90s, and the Steelers seem to be taking over for the Boys.

Also, with the Skins, Nationals, and Wizards being on hard times, fans of the Capitals, a team that even when winning has struggled to sustain a fanbase, are growing in numbers.

Again, I say great, but I've noticed lately that these new Caps fans seem to get their jollies off by putting down the Redskins.

Sure, there are a lot of negative things to say about the Skins. After all, they did lose to Detroit last week and were dreadful in the first half yesterday, but I'm of the mind that each sports team in your city represents you—much like your high school and college teams did (and in some cases still do).

So Caps fans in D.C., why are you knocking your other home team? Go check out any D.C. paper's message boards in the sports section, and you'll see several people knocking the Nats, Skins, or Dan Snyder and at the same time praising the Caps

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of Dan Snyder, but I don't cheer for Snyder. I cheer for the team on the field—the same way I did before Snyder and the same way I will during and after him.

Also, where was all this GO CAPS! Rock the Red mantra a few seasons ago when the Caps were the laughingstock of the NHL? It was nowhere to be found.

Why? It's simple—because the fans yelling the loudest right now weren't around in those lean years, and when the Caps go through them again, these fans won't be around either.

So to all you bandwagon fans, I welcome you to the fold. I love seeing a sea of red at the Verizon Center, but how about we show the same support for the other teams in the District?

So to all my fellow fans out there, let's go Caps, Skins, Nats, Wiz, and hell, let's go United as well.
