Kalil Undergoes Successful Surgery
Friday, Sept. 23
"Kalil had successful surgery today to repair a labrum tear in his right hip," the Vikings announced in a statement. "The procedure was done by team physician Chris Larson at Twin Cities Orthopedics."
On Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network noted that the lineman was officially transferred to IR.
Kalil Crucial Cog in Vikings Offensive Line
Kalil has developed into a stalwart member of the Vikings line since the team selected him with the fourth overall pick in 2012. His role was probably even more important this year, as he protected the blind side for Sam Bradford and Shaun Hill following Teddy Bridgewater's injury.
The 27-year-old has also remained durable during his time in Minnesota. He appeared in all 64 of the team's regular-season games during his first four years in the NFL. But this is another major setback for a team that's already without Bridgewater and Adrian Peterson.
T.J. Clemmings figures to receive the first opportunity to fill the crucial void at left tackle. Jeremiah Sirles is the team's other option should Clemmings struggle in the more high-profile role.
Ultimately, no matter how the coaching staff attempts to fill the void, it's unlikely the line will perform at the same level without Kalil. And that's worrisome news for the offense, which has endured terrible injury luck over the past few months.
