Stephen Curry Says He Will 'Most Likely' Stand for National Anthem

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry supports San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's message, but he doesn't intend to take a knee during the national anthem.

According to Anthony Slater of the Mercury News, Curry said the following Tuesday night as a guest speaker at the TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco:

"

I'll most likely stand. Colin, if you follow the way he talks, the message he's trying to send with his act, he's not, from his mouth, disrespecting the veterans or the military. That's not his intention. He's obviously continued the act to create the conversation for more social justice and things of that nature. I've been a part of certain conversations off the grid, finding different ways to make our community better, especially for African-Americans. That's not the way I'll do it. But I support him in his attempt to start the conversation or continue the conversation.

"

Since Kaepernick first decided against standing during the national anthem in the preseason, several players from multiple NFL teams have joined him in either kneeling or raising a fist. The list includes Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall and Miami Dolphins running back Arian Foster, among others.

Curry added the following:

"

You just have to be true to yourself and understand both sides of the equation and be OK with the consequences, like Colin is. My approach is not going to please everyone and that's what America is about. Some people agree with Colin, some don't. But the common thread is that there is change that needs to be made.

"

Prior to Kaepernick's protest, the NBA quartet of LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul spoke about the importance of social activism at the start of the ESPY Awards in July. Their speech came on the heels of multiple shooting deaths involving African-Americans and police officers, which has been Kaepernick's primary area of focus.
