Jahri Evans to Saints: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction
Guard Jahri Evans' tenure with the New Orleans Saints appeared to be over when the team released him in February, but he rejoined the organization Wednesday on a one-year contract, the team announced.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network first reported the deal, and Adam Caplan of ESPN confirmed the contract length.
The 33-year-old Evans was a fourth-round pick out of Bloomsburg by the Saints in 2006, and he quickly developed into one of the best and most consistent guards in football.
Evans was named to the Pro Bowl every year from 2009 to 2014, and he was also a First-Team All-Pro selection in four of those seasons.
The Philadelphia native played in and started every game from his rookie year in 2006 through the 2012 campaign before he finally missed two contests in 2013.
Injuries became a much bigger issue for Evans in 2015, though, as he sat out five games with knee and ankle ailments.
Evans was nowhere near as effective as usual when he was in the lineup, and with a hefty cap number attached to him, the Saints made the decision to cut ties early in the offseason.
The Seattle Seahawks eventually signed Evans in August, but after just one month with the team, he fell short of making the 53-man roster and was cut again.
With the Saints in need of offensive line depth, they turned to a familiar face and managed to ink Evans at a fraction of the price compared to what he would have cost had they not released him to begin with.
Evans isn't likely to start right away with Tim Lelito and Andrus Peat entrenched at left guard and right guard, respectively, but he provides insurance should one of them get injured or struggle.
The veteran is an expert on New Orleans' offense, and his presence and leadership should provide a positive influence within the locker room.
Evans may not be the same elite player he once was, but the depth and experience he adds to the Saints offense make him a worthwhile addition.
