Super Bowl Commercials 2016: Top Movie Trailers to Debut This Sunday
Like the 50th Super Bowl must do on the field and for its halftime performance, Super Bowl commercials and movie trailers must one-up the strong performance from last year.
The movie trailers were so great last year that they were hard to forget. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, Need for Speed and many others had viewers on the edges of their seats and eventually in the theater with tubs of popcorn in their laps.
So how does Hollywood up the ante? Pretty simply, actually: by featuring a ton of animated animals, an epic return to a fantasy landscape and maybe bringing back Jason Bourne and high-profile superheroes such as Deadpool.

Wix.com has one of this year's rare confirmed ads and got out in front of the competition by releasing trailers for its new campaign, which features the characters from the cast of Kung Fu Panda 3.
The company shared a peek at the debut:
Walt Disney Studios wasn't far behind in releasing a sneak peek of what looks like an incredible live-action trailer for The Jungle Book:
While the clip is brief, it's quite clear the movie wants to swing for the proverbial fences by emerging from the 50th Super Bowl as the clear-cut winner of the movie trailer wars.
Also confirmed to be in serious contention for the spot, however, is Disney's Alice Through The Looking Glass, which also got a live-action spot that will debut during the big game:
Dropping these ads and even entering the race for best movie trailer during the Super Bowl is a costly endeavor.
According to Claire Groden of Fortune, a 30-second ad costs as much as $5 million, which is 11 percent higher than ads for last year and marks a 75 percent increase since 2005. She explained why many companies don't scoff at the cost:
"Prices are only so high because marketers are willing to pay to access the enormous Super Bowl audience. Some 114.4 million people on average tuned into the 2015 Super Bowl to watch the Seattle Seahawks play the Patriots, making the game the most-watched broadcast in the history of U.S. television. That estimate doesn't even account for larger viewing groups at private parties, or bars.
"
With such a huge asking price, though, it only makes sense that there may not be a large amount of movie trailers on the big day.
It's clear Disney isn't holding anything back, but what about the rest?
Lucas Siegel of Comicbook.com (via Yahoo Movies) broke down reported ad-buy numbers: "What we know: Fox has bought two 30-second spots, Universal one 60-second spot, Paramount one 30-second spot, and Disney an undisclosed 'multiple spots.' Sony and Warner Bros. have reportedly not bought any."
Using these numbers, it's not hard to speculate about who and what might be joining Kung Fu Panda 3, The Jungle Book and Alice Through The Looking Glass.
One would be a long-awaited sequel hinted above, the fifth Bourne movie. As Erik Davis of Movies.com pointed out, there was a possible leak of information on social media hinting at the major debut:
"What we're hearing: It's not officially confirmed (though the author of the most recent Jason Bourne novel kinda let the cat out of the bag on social media), but chances are strong that the only movie we'll be seeing the first footage from come Sunday will be the next Bourne installment, which will most assuredly reveal its title along with the trailer.
"
Davis goes on to mention plenty of other possible debuts, from Captain America: Civil War right on to the much-anticipated Independence Day: Resurgence, citing the latter because some of the movie's biggest stars will be in attendance at the game.
Speaking of movie stars in attendance leading to strong feelings that a movie will have a debut trailer, keep in mind Deadpool thanks to the presence of lead Ryan Reynolds.
ScreenCrush revealed Reynolds' role on the big day: "Consider it one last push for Deadpool, which opens the week after the Super Bowl. In addition to some new footage, Ryan Reynolds will be on hand at the Super Bowl, handing out Deadpool's favorite snack, chimichangas, from a branded food truck."
With a trio of high-profile releases confirmed as well as Hollywood studios spending mind-numbing amounts of money for 30 seconds of a viewer's time and even going so far as to send the lead actors to the big game, it's pretty clear Hollywood will live up to its end of the bargain at the 50th Super Bowl.
And even in this age of instant communication thanks to social media, there are still a few secrets sure to shock the globe. Look for Hollywood to bring its A-game Sunday.
