The Patriots placed Lewis on injured reserve, per Adam Caplan of ESPN. The news comes after Jeff McBride of the Boston Globe reported, citing a source, that Lewis will not be available for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL.
Patriots Will Miss Lewis in Passing Attack
Lewis was out of football in 2014 but joined the Patriots this year and has been a revelation. Although his opportunities to run the ball have been limited, the 25-year-old has been a matchup nightmare as a pass-catcher.
An abdominal injury kept Lewis out of Week 7's win over the New York Jets, when Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was the leading rusher. Even if Lewis doesn't carry the ball often, he brings an added element to the offense the other backs don't.
LeGarrette Blount is more of a north-south, downhill runner who can create yards after the point of contact and help compensate for a beat-up offensive line. He's capable of catching the ball, but he's not on Lewis' level.
The other backs on the roster who can contribute as pass-catchers are James White and Brandon Bolden. However, it stands to reason Blount will have the majority of touches in the backfield the rest of the season.
