Taylor Mays to Raiders: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
The Oakland Raiders announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed safety Taylor Mays after placing defensive end Justin Tuck on injured reserve.ย
The merry-go-round continues for Mays, whom the Raiders cut a day before their Week 5 game against the Denver Broncos. According to CSNBayArea.com's Scott Bair, the decision to cut him was based upon his availability while dealing with an ankle injury. ย ย ย
It wasn't the first time the Raiders had cut him this season either.ย
Going into 2015, Mays began the preseason as a member of the Detroit Lions but was granted a release toward the end of August. Just days later, he signed with the Raiders.
He didn't last long, as Oakland released him 10 days after his signing, but itย brought him back for Week 2 after the team suffered injuriesโmost notably to Nate Allenโin the secondary.ย
Mays appeared in three consecutive games for the Raiders from Weeks 2-4, recording just five total tackles. He fills the roster spot that was left open by Tuck, who is lost for the season after tearing his pectoral muscle, per the San Jose Mercury News' Jerry McDonald.ย
It doesn't look likely Mays will play much during his third stint in Oakland this year, but his presence does add depth to a defensive unit that is ranked 31st in the league against the pass. The 27-year-old's spot could fall under pressure again when Allen returns, which could be as early as Week 9, according to theย San Francisco Chronicle's Vic Tafur.ย
