Spurs to Offer Max Contract

Saturday, April 25

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports the Spurs are expected to offer the newly crowned Defensive Player of the Year a maximum contract on the first day of free agency. Early indications are the San Diego State product is happy in San Antonio:

"

For now, there's no scenario where Leonard plans to pursue offer sheets on the market, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

Leonard wants to be a Spur, and the Spurs are expected to come calling on July 1 with the max offer that they resisted delivering Leonard in the preseason, a move born out of preserving cap space to bring on a star free agent this summer.

"

The report notes San Antonio's front office is hopeful it can have everything sorted out by July 1—the day it can offer Leonard a max contract. It also hopes any lingering questions about Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili's future playing plans are answered.

Then the Spurs' focus can shift to adding a potential running partner with Leonard. One such player is Portland Trail Blazers power forward LaMarcus Aldridge.

If everything goes smoothly for San Antonio, it will get the Leonard contract finalized and then use him as a recruiting piece in the Aldridge sweepstakes, which Wojnarowski mentions.

The update on Leonard's status comes one day after an outstanding 32-point effort on Friday, as the Spurs grabbed a 2-1 lead over the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the playoffs. He's averaging 24.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game in the postseason.

Leonard, the 2014 NBA Finals MVP, is the biggest asset the franchise has moving forward. For now, it sounds like Spurs fans don't have to worry about him heading elsewhere after this season.
