For the third time in four years, Jonathan Martin will be wearing a new NFL uniform. The former second-round pick has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Carolina Panthers.

Panthers GM Dave Gettleman weighed in on the signing:

Martin's NFL career has been defined more by things that have happened off the field than his performance.

After starting his first 23 games with the Miami Dolphins, Martin left the team amid a scandal in which Richie Incognito and other teammates were found to be bullying the ex-Stanford player.

Martin found a second chance in San Francisco with the 49ers last season. It seemed like a good fit since head coach Jim Harbaugh knew him from their time together at Stanford.

However, with Harbaugh no longer in San Francisco, the 49ers decided to move on from Martin by waiving him on March 26, as Yahoo Sports' Rand Getlin (via B/R's Matt Miller) noted on Twitter:

It didn't help Martin's cause that he struggled last season. Per Chris Biderman of Niners Digest, citing Pro Football Focus rankings, the 25-year-old was ranked 69th in run blocking and allowed six sacks in pass protection.

The news is not all bleak for Martin. Once again, he has the opportunity to create a fresh start for himself, isn't far removed from being the 42nd overall pick and is only 25 years old.

There's no denying that Martin has to work on being more consistent, but with the right coaching and enough time to get acclimated to his new surroundings, he can be a serviceable player.
