Jamal Crawford Turns Chris Paul Turnover into Crucial Bucket in Clippers Win
So he didn’t turn five loaves into 5,000, but Jamal Crawford did twist a surefire disaster into a basketball miracle of sorts against the Denver Nuggets.
The 34-year-old Los Angeles Clippers guard took over the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game, scoring 21 of his 23 points in the final frame and pulling off one of the more ridiculous assists you’ll ever see in a professional basketball game.
The save came in the final minute-and-a-half of regulation, with the game tied 94-94. Grabbing a Nuggets turnover, Chris Paul sprayed a bit too much mustard on an outlet pass to Crawford, who was streaking down the right side of the court.
The pass was a bad, dumb turnover on Paul’s part—or would’ve been, had Crawford not pulled some Spider-Man stuff and saved the day. Somehow, the Clippers’ 2014 Sixth Man of the Year grabbed the errant pass and flipped it backward to Matt Barnes for an easy layup.
The Clippers went on to beat Denver 102-98, largely due to the fact that Crawford is an ageless creature from an adjacent solar system.
After the game, DeAndre Jordan sang his praise for Crawford while his teammate attempted to give an interview.
Crawford told The Associated Press (via ESPN) that he came into the game looking to attack the Denver defense.
“I wanted to be aggressive and try to open up stuff,” Crawford said. “I always have belief.”
Clippers coach Doc Rivers told the press that Crawford was promising his teammates a win during timeouts.
“He was guaranteeing it,” Rivers said.
Crawford claimed he knew Barnes would be there when he saved Paul’s pass.
“I knew if I saved it, he’d be right there under the basket,” Crawford said.
