Arsene Wenger vs. Jose Mourinho and the Arsenal Manager's 5 Worst Touchline Rows

James McNicholasOct 6, 2014

Arsene Wenger's touchline spat with Jose Mourinho on Sunday was the culmination of a decade of frustration. Wenger has never beaten the Portuguese manager, and has a palpable dislike for both his character and his style of football.

Wenger does not reserve his rage for Mourinho alone, however. This was not the first touchline tussle of his career. In this piece, we countdown the five most notable sideline scraps of his time with Arsenal, ranking them according to their seriousness.

Go to the next slide to begin the countdown.

5. Arsene Wenger vs. Kenny Dalglish, 2011

When Liverpool were awarded a penalty in 13th minute of stoppage time back in April 2011, Arsene Wenger was furious. He exchanged angry words with Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish, who didn't mind giving a bit back.

Wenger might have been better advised to aim his anger at Emmanuel Eboue, whose needless foul had led to the concession of the penalty.

Unlike in many of these spats, the two veteran managers did at least shake hands at the end of the game to signal a truce.

4. Arsene Wenger vs. Mark Hughes, 2009

2 of 5

Arsene Wenger and Mark Hughes are not exactly the best of friends. After the Gunners lost 3-0 to Hughes' Manchester City in a League Cup tie, Wenger infamously declined to shake Hughes' hand.

After the game, Wenger told the BBC:

"

On Saturday, I am managing my 500th game at Arsenal and I believe I have shaken hands 497 times.

It is a ceremonial courtesy but the most important is not the ceremonial but the courtesy of behaviour.

"

It seems there are certain managers who have the capacity to get under Wenger's skin. Hughes is undoubtedly one of them, as the pair have failed to shake hands on several occasions since.

3. Arsene Wenger vs. Jose Mourinho, 2014

This confrontation between Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho was not their first, but it was notable because it spilled over in to an exchange of physicality. As Mourinho tried to hold Wenger back, the Frenchman pushed his counterpart away.

Although is was somewhat undignified, Arsenal fans certainly enjoyed seeing their manager take the fight to his opponent.

2. Arsene Wenger vs. Massimo Busacca, 2001

4 of 5

Arsene Wenger does not only lose his rag with opposition managers. Match officials can be caught in the fire too.

During Arsenal's match with Barcelona in 2011, Wenger was incensed by referee Massimo Busacca sent off Robin van Persie for a second bookable offence after the Dutchman had a shot on goal after the referee had blown. Van Persie had claimed he could not hear the noise over the massive crowd.

After ranting on the sidelines, Wenger twice approached Busacca after the final whistle to put his view across. His indiscretion resulted in a one-game touchline ban and a €10,000 fine.

1. Arsene Wenger vs. Alan Pardew, 2006

5 of 5

In November 2006, Alan Pardew was forced to apologise to Arsene Wenger after celebrating Marlon Harewood's late winner in an inflammatory manner. On the touchline, Wenger was irate.

After the game, Pardew told the BBC:

"

It was shame because it was a tense game and we were under lot of pressure. I was celebrating the goal, that was all basically.

Arsene seemed to have a problem with that, probably rightly. It was frustration, there was nothing personal.

"

Wenger was fined £10,000 for his protests, and tensions between the pair have never quite subsided. However, at least the Arsenal manager has never taken to head-butting an opponent, however tempted he might have been.

The same, unfortunately, can not be said for Pardew.
