Under Armour Releases New 'Alter Ego' Superhero Cleats

They’re not the shoes football needs. They’re the shoes football deserves.

Under Armour’s newest line of footwear is aimed to capture athletes’ inner comic book enthusiast. Dubbed the “Alter Ego Highlight MC,” the line comes in multiple styles, each inspired by a different DC or Marvel Comics superhero. 

ESPN's Darren Rovell first reported Under Armour’s new release, which will include designs based on Superman, Batman, Captain America, The Hulk and The Flash.

Under Armour also has a line of superhero gloves (bat-stars not included).

While ridiculously nostalgic, the cleats aren’t cheap ($140) and their wild color schemes could prove problematic for players facing strict uniform color restrictions. They also look like one solid stomp on the foot would leave you writhing in super agony.

The superhero shtick may be on its final legs in football. Cam Newton made the Superman chest-rip celebration trendy years ago, and everyone from Colin Kaepernick to Johnny Manziel has taken to mimicking the move since.

Then again, superheroes never seem to fall out of style in pop culture. We grew up with these icons, and eat them up like bowls of Fruit Loop-y nostalgia whenever given the chance. Naturally, companies like Under Armour respond by making cleats that allow us to channel our inner heroes/spirit guides on the field. 

I know one thing: It’ll be a safe day in Gotham before Roger Goodell allows these suckers on an NFL field.
