In a recent interview with La Sexta reported by Stefan Coerts of Goal.com, former Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka gave a bit of insight into the situation of Iker Casillas.

Karanka revealed that it took a lot of deliberating on whether or not Casillas would be benched and that the decision was ultimately made due to his poor form. According to Karanka, the coaches expected more out of the captain.

"We thought a lot about his situation because we knew he was not just any player. We thought he should be performing better. I don’t know if Iker understood why he was benched. The same thing happened with [Fernando] Hierro, [Manuel] Sanchis and Raul. I think that he must have understood the situation."

It seems as though the only way Casillas is going to win back his starting spot is by showing he deserves it. But with limited chances that may be more difficult than ever.

Everyone who watches football understands the love Iker Casillas has for La Roja. He is a World Cup winner and hero and wants to be in Brazil next summer.

However, his place in the Spain squad may be in jeopardy due to his limited playing time for Real Madrid.

In a recent article by Marca.com, it was pointed out that Casillas had to correct himself several times when giving an interview about the upcoming World Cup. The article went as far to say that he was, "conscious that his chances could be hindered."

The most shocking moment of the interview came when Casillas had to correct himself when referring to himself being in Brazil next summer.

"We promise...or the people who will be there promise dedication..."

With his place in the Spain squad questionable, Casillas could finally look for a way out of Real Madrid in search of more playing time.

It now seems as though yet another English club is interested in making a move for Iker Casillas with Arsenal the latest name in the headlines.

Talksport.com recently cited an article from Mundodeportivo.com (in Spanish) which claimed that Casillas is contemplating leaving Real Madrid this summer to join Arsenal.

The report claims that having Spanish stars such as Santi Cazorla and Nacho Monreal at Arsenal could sway Casillas, while meeting back up with former teammate Mesut Ozil would be favorable as well. Talk Sport also claims that Manchester City is also keen on Casillas, but are also looking at Barcelona's Victor Valdes.

Though this report may seem very interesting, it must also be noted that it comes from a Barcelona-based newspaper. Though it is hard to trust the link in this case, no one really knows what Casillas could be thinking.

With all of the rumors linking Arsenal and Manchester City with a move for Iker Casillas, the Real Madrid captain has openly stated that his future lies with the Spanish club.

Casillas appeared on El Hormiguero as reported by Insidespanishfootball.com, and had the following to say about the rumors and his future.

“Many people are speculating about my situation. It’s not the same as it has been in recent years. Every day rumours appear and whilst these stories appear, I belong to Real Madrid, which is the club of my life. I want to stay here. Right now, my decision is to stay at Real Madrid. I want to get the tenth (European Cup), more trophies and more league titles.

In the future I see myself out of Real Madrid, inside ten years. At 38 it will be much more difficult for me. Today, I’m one of Los Blancos. I’m delighted to be at Real Madrid. In five or six years, we’ll see.”

His statements, for the time being, may have silenced all of the rumors. But as he stated, nobody knows what the future holds.

Iker Casillas is still fighting for his starting spot at Real Madrid. However, it doesn't look as though Casillas will return to the regular lineup anytime soon and that could spell the end to his career at Real Madrid.

According to AS.com, and reported by Football-Espana.net, Casillas is weighing up his options for the future.

The reports claim that Casillas has decided that if he is not the starting keeper by the end of the season that he will in fact leave the club. There is no shortage of interested clubs and Casillas would have plenty of options with Arensal and Manchester City monitoring his situation.

While these rumors continue to circle it does appear as though Casillas will at least not be leaving the Spanish club in January. His ultimate future though, is up in the air.
