Stock Up, Stock Down for Chicago Cubs' Top 10 Prospect for Week 13

1 of 11

With a 4-2 record last week, the Chicago Cubs are now three games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for fourth place in the NL Central, and at this point avoiding a last-place finish is really all the team has to play for from a standings perspective.

July is here, and that means the trade deadline is right around the corner. Expect the Cubs to be as aggressive of sellers as any team in the league as they look to continue to stockpile prospects for their ongoing rebuild.

For now, here is a look at how the team's top 10 prospects performed over the past week and what direction their stock is trending.

Note: Top prospects according to Baseball America Prospect Handbook

*No. 4 prospect SP Arodys Vizcaino (Tommy John surgery recovery) is currently sidelined and will not be included until he's active.

*No. 9 prospect RP Kyuji Fujikawa is not included since he is currently playing at the major league level.

*No. 11 prospect SP Juan Carlos Paniagua is currently dealing with visa issues, according to Baseball America, and will not be included until he is stateside and playing.

No. 13 Prospect: SP Alberto Cabrera, Double-A Tennessee

    2013 Stats

    16 GS, 7-3, 3.49 ERA, 36 BB, 97 K, 98 IP

    Overview

Sent to Double-A this season to stretch out as a starter after working out of the Cubs bullpen in the second half last season, Alberto Cabrera hasn't missed a beat and looks like he could be an important piece of the team's future.

Since getting shelled for 10 hits and five runs in five innings back on June 6, he's gone 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 27.1 innings of work. He had his best start of the season last Monday, allowed three hits and one run in eight innings while striking out 13.

No. 12 Prospect: 3B Christian Villanueva, Double-A Tennessee

    2013 Stats

    .249/.308/.422, 20 2B, 2 3B, 8 HR, 38 RBI, 30 R

    Overview

Ranked as the No. 100 prospect in baseball prior to last season, Christian Villanueva has struggled in his first Double-A season, but there is still plenty of offensive potential there.

His 20 doubles are tied for the Southern League lead, and he hit a pair of home runs last week after hitting just six in his first 255 at-bats, but his average continues to dip as he's hitting .182 in the past 10 games.

    2013 Stats

    Overview

A somewhat unheralded prospect entering last season, Arismendy Alcantara hit .302 in a full season at High-A and as a result moved into the Cubs' top prospect picture for the first time this season.

The Dominican-native was named to the World Team in the upcoming Futures Game, as he'll get to showcase his talents with some of the best prospects in the game at Citi Field during All-Star weekend.

No. 8 Prospect: 3B Jeimer Candelario, Low-A Kane County

5 of 11

    2013 Stats

    .250/.332/.358, 22 2B, 3 HR, 26 RBI, 35 R

    Overview

Coming off of a 1-15 week last week and mired in a 5-for-39 slump, Jeimer Candelario got back on track this past week with a pair of multi-hit games and a couple of extra-base hits.

With his professional approach at the plate and good discipline, it's sometimes easy to forget he's still just 19 years old. His numbers aren't eye-popping, but all things considered it's been a decent season for a prospect who is a major wild card at this point.

No. 7 Prospect: 1B Dan Vogelbach, Low-A Kane County

6 of 11

    2013 Stats

    .278/.349/.448, 15 2B, 12 HR, 48 RBI, 33 R

    Overview

Raw power potential made Dan Vogelbach a second-round pick in 2011, and he flashed that power last season when he had 21 doubles and 17 home runs in 245 at-bats.

His 12 home runs on the season are tied for fourth in the Midwest League, with teammate Rock Shoulders currently leading the league with 15. Mired in a slump of sorts heading into last week, he enjoyed one of his best weeks of the season, logging four multi-hit games including a four-hit performance on Wednesday.

No. 6 Prospect: SP Pierce Johnson, High-A Daytona

7 of 11

    2013 Stats

    13 GS, 5-5, 3.10 ERA, 22 BB, 74 K, 69.2 IP at Low-A Kane County
    2 GS, 0-1, 4.91 ERA, 6 BB, 9 K, 11 IP at High-A Daytona

    Overview

Promoted to High-A on June 20, Johnson made his debut for Daytona this past week and went six innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out six.

Selected No. 43 overall last year, the 22-year-old is the Cubs' top pitching prospect right now with Arodys Vizcaino on the shelf, and how quickly he adjusts to the High-A level will likely determine if he has a chance of seeing the majors at the end of next season.

No. 5 Prospect: CF Brett Jackson

    2013 Stats

    .223/.300/.367, 7 2B, 3 3B, 6 HR, 23 RBI, 24 R, 7 SB

    Overview

Currently sidelined with a strained quad, Brett Jackson went on the seven-day disabled list back on June 22, and big picture a week off may actually help him clear his head.

With his average slowly dropping over the past two months, the 24-year-old is slowly playing himself out of the top prospect picture. He entered last year as the team's No. 1 prospect according to Baseball America, but went on to strike out 217 times. He's already fanned 77 times in 215 at-bats this year, and he'll have to find a way to make more consistent contact.

No. 3 Prospect: RF Jorge Soler, High-A Daytona

9 of 11

    2013 Stats

    .281/.343/.467, 13 2B, 1 3B, 8 HR, 35 RBI, 38 R

    Overview

Sidelined with a shin injury since June 13, it was finally announced this past Thursday that Jorge Soler had a fractured left shin and would be in a walking boot for four-to-six weeks, according to a tweet from Carrie Muscat of MLB.com.

He'll drop off of this list moving forward, as there will be no news to update for the 21-year-old, and hopefully he can make up for lost time by playing in the Arizona Fall League this coming offseason.

    Overview

With seven home runs and 16 RBI over the previous two weeks, Javier Baez was on an absolute tear heading into this past week, and while he cooled off a bit, his all-around numbers remain impressive.

The 20-year-old was one of five players on the final ballot to play in the Futures Game, though he trailed last year's No. 1 overall pick Carlos Correa in voting as of Saturday. The voting closed Sunday night, and the Futures Game will be played on July 14.
