Steelers Offseason Update

Giles AugustineContributor IApril 24, 2009

UPDATE:  Steelers sign Keiwan Ratliff.  From what I have seen, he is shaky at best.  Any cornerback will be good with the Steelers pass rush.  This will allow the Steelers not to draft a cornerback on the first day.

Key Additions:

James Harrison6 year deal

This was the most important deal.  They got the D.P.O.Y. at a discount.  He was working out two days after the Super Bowl.  The rich just got richer.

Max StarksDesignated Franchise Tag

This was a great move.  He has been with the Steelers since Roethlisberger's rookie season, and has two rings as a starter.  Many people criticized the tag last year.  I don't think they will have the same tune this year.

Chris KemoeatuFive Year Deal

Chris is a huge blocker, and earned a deal this year.  He turned down less money from the Jets to stay with the Steelers.  This shows he is dedicated to another Super Bowl run.  I believe there is only upside with this deal. Expect this year to be a break out year for Chris.

Willie ColonOne Year Tender

Willie has been criticized for the past two years since he has been a starter.  He has had his ups and downs over the past year.  He had a great postseason, and he will most likely improve.

Keyaron FoxRe-Signed Two Year Deal

This is a huge move in my eyes.  He was key to a special teams that allowed no touchdowns on kick offs or punts.  He is young and could add more than just special teams, but probably won't because of LB depth.

Anthony MadisonOne Year Tender

He adds depth to defensive backs.  He is also a great special teams ace.  He probably will not be a starter, but is a great back up.

Charlie BatchOne Year Offer

He is a solid back-up.  It would have been a great to have Leftwich.

Key Losses:

Byron Leftwich

He is a star caliber player.  If he starts for Tampa, they will have a great year.

Anthony Smith

See Ya.

Bryant McFadden

The Steelers couldn't afford him.  William Gay will be step up and no one will notice he is gone.  If there is an injury, the Steelers will be dangerously thin at the position. Expect a CB to be drafted high, either in the first or second round.

Nate Washington

He was the fastest player on the Steelers roster.  He also had awful hands.  Limas Sweed will step up.  This might be an area of concern, but he was only a third string player.  Expect the Steelers to draft a WR on the first draft day.

To Do List:

Re-sign Heath Miller.

He has been a great player and staple of the offense.  It would be a mistake to let him go.  If they don't sign him to a long term contract he will be the Franchise or Transition player next year.

Get depth for Defensive Backs, Center, Wide Receiver, and Defensive Line

The Steelers have incredible depth at all positions.  They will bring back their entire O-Line with a year under their belts.  They should be greatly improved.  They only lost one starter, who did not start for many games during the season.  They still lack depth at some positions, but they will fill those needs during this years draft.  They have no immediate needs for starters, so they will have a year to develop those younger players.
