Blackhawks Break NHL Record for Consecutive Games With a Point to Start Season

Mike MoraitisFeb 22, 2013

The Chicago Blackhawksย (14-0-3) are now in sole possession of the NHL record for most consecutive games with a point to start a season.

ESPN Stats & Info broke the news once it became official after the Blackhawks defeated the San Jose Sharks on Friday night, 2-1:

"

Blackhawks set NHL record by recording at least 1 point in 17 straight games to start season

Chicago got to this point by winning 14 games and suffering three shootout losses.

The 'Hawks broke the record that was originally set by the Anaheim Ducks in 2006-07 after their first 16 games to start that season.ย Those Ducks went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Before that, the 1984-85 Edmonton Oilers scored a point in each of their first 15 games to start the season and also won the Stanley Cup.

Hopefully for Blackhawks fans, their squad will follow suit.ย

Chicago didn't exactly have an path road to this record, as it had to come back in multiple contests andย even had to play 10 of its first 12 games on the road to start the season.

In the Friday nightย game against the Sharks, the 'Hawks fell behind 1-0 in the first period, but then went on to score one goal in the second period and another in the third thanks to Viktor Stalberg and Brandon Saad, who notched the game-winner.

In an earlier meeting this season on Feb. 5, the Sharks jumped out to a 3-1 lead over the 'Hawks, but Chicago answered back with two goals later on in the first and added two more in the second and third periods.

It just goes to show you how easily Chicago'sย streak could have been snapped and how truly remarkable this record is.
