The Gamecocks picked up an elite talent at the linebacker position when Matt Rolin committed to South Carolina during an unofficial visit on Memorial Day weekend.
Rolin, a four-star linebacker from Virginia, picked the Gamecocks over his other finalists in Florida State and Virginia Tech. South Carolina has long been considered the favorite to land Rolin in the past two months, and Rolin followed through on that pledge by sending out a tweet of himself in a Gamecock jersey.
The South Carolina coaching staff did a great job recruiting Rolin.
They did, however, have a bit of a help with the talented recruit. Rolin has several family connections to the University of South Carolina. Both of Rolin's parents are Carolina graduates, and he has some other family members still in the Columbia area.
South Carolina is landing a top talent at the linebacker position. This group needs to replace several outgoing players in 2013, and Rolin is a guy that could step in and challenge for a starting spot at the outside linebacker position. He's a big hitter who can stop the run, rush the passer and drop back in coverage.
Rolin is the sixth four-star commitment for the Gamecocks according to 247Sports.com. Right now South Carolina has 13 commitments for the class of 2013 and is listed in the Top 10 in the recruiting rankings as well.
The commitment of Rolin is a solid verbal commitment, so don't worry about him flipping to one school or the other. He will become a recruiter for the Gamecocks like several other commitments and should help bring in another stellar class for South Carolina.
The Gamecocks landed a good one and can't wait to get Rolin on campus.
